Outlander star Richard Rankin loves all the old characters coming back for season 7
As a die-hard Outlander fan who has been following this captivating series since its inception, I am absolutely thrilled with the unexpected twists and turns that the seventh season’s second half is offering. The return of familiar faces like Geillis Duncan and the Fraser family members, Brian and Jenny, has added a delightful nostalgic charm to the plotline, which I believe is a clever tactic to reacquaint us with these characters before they take center stage in the upcoming spinoff, Blood of My Blood.
In the latter part of season 7, Outlander continues its exciting journey, filled with unexpected twists. The Fraser family, comprising Jamie and Claire (played by Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe), Jamie’s Scottish homeland beckons once more. Meanwhile, their son-in-law Roger (Richard Rankin) embarks on a challenging quest to rescue his son Jemmy (Blake Johnston-Miller), who has mysteriously been taken through time. To do so, Roger and an ancestor, Buck (Diarmaid Murtagh), utilize the Craigh Na Dun stones for time travel. However, they accidentally leap further back in history than intended, landing approximately 20 years before their targeted date. The Fraser family’s estate, Lallybroch, is still managed by Jamie’s father Brian Fraser (Andrew Whipp) and a younger version of Jamie’s sister Jenny (Kristin Atherton).
Rankin shared, “It seems like one surprise after another, and this has resulted in an engaging and innovative storyline for Buck and Roger,” Rankin said in an interview with TV Insider. “The subplot involving Brian and Jenny is exciting because I believe fans will appreciate these references as they are all well-acquainted with these characters. And it’s going to be a treat for the audience to witness them again in this setting.
Rankin took great pleasure in the reappearance of Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek), a character from the series’ past. This storyline provides the writers with numerous opportunities to bring back beloved characters. Murtagh found it amusing how the show kept viewers guessing. “I think the way it’s executed, the manner in which the episodes are put together, it’s incredibly enjoyable. You hear a knock on a door, and you assume you know who will open it, but all of a sudden, the perspective has shifted completely,” he commented.
Outlander may have an ulterior motive in bringing back these characters
It’s clear that fans are excited about these characters returning, but I can’t help but ponder if “Outlander” is planning something unique with this narrative. Next year, they will debut a spinoff titled “Blood of My Blood“, which will delve into the romantic tales of Jamie’s parents and Claire as well. Is bringing back Jamie’s father Brian in such a way on the primary series an attempt to reacquaint fans with the character before he assumes a significant role in the upcoming prequel?
Additionally, it’s exciting to bring these characters back for fans as the series approaches its conclusion. Following the second half of season 7, viewers will experience another Droughtlander (interrupted by “Blood of My Blood“) before the final season 8 bids farewell to the show forever. Until that time, new episodes will be released on Fridays on Starz.
