Outlander star reveals brutal reason he lost James Bond role to Daniel Craig

Outlander actor Sam Heughan has explained why he wasn’t chosen for the role of James Bond when he tried out for it in 2006’s Casino Royale – the film that marked Daniel Craig’s first appearance as 007.

Sam Heughan, well-known for playing Jamie Fraser in the historical drama series on Starz, was among the actors considered for the famous role. Since then, his name has frequently surfaced in discussions about who might be cast.

In a recent interview with The Times, the Scottish actor shared his memories of auditioning for the role. He also revealed the harsh explanation producers supposedly gave him for why they chose someone else.

“It was all completely confidential,” he explained. “The team behind Bond brought me to their meeting room-the casting director, producer Barbara Broccoli, and director Martin Campbell were all present.”

There was a golden gun lying on the table, and I was asked to film the scene immediately. It was a really strange situation,” he said, then explained that he’d been told he “wasn’t charismatic enough”.

Even so, Craig was a remarkably successful James Bond. Now that he’s officially finished playing 007 and is focusing on solving mysteries as Benoit Blanc in the Knives Out movies, the role of Bond is available again.

In an interview with the New York Post earlier this year, Heughan described the role as a “significant challenge,” and then jokingly added: “It seems like every British actor who has ever put on a suit has been considered for the Bond role at one time or another.”

Although the next actor to play the iconic role hasn’t been revealed yet, production is already starting on the 26th movie in the popular spy series. Denis Villeneuve and Steven Knight have been officially confirmed as the director and screenwriter, respectively.

Knight, famous for creating Peaky Blinders, has said he wants to create a storyline that is “better, stronger, and bolder.” He previously mentioned: “It’s always been a goal of mine, and I’m thrilled to have been asked to do it.”

I’m really excited to begin! As a lifelong Bond fan, I hope that passion will come through in my work. I aim to create something that feels familiar yet fresh – something that’s stronger, bolder, and ultimately, an improvement on what’s come before.
