Outlander star Henry Ashton is Daeron “the Drunken” Targaryen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

As a gamer with over two decades of immersion in the vast and intricate world of Westeros, I eagerly await HBO’s upcoming series, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” Set amidst the lore-rich era of the Tales of Dunk and Egg, this prequel promises to captivate us with its smaller scale yet grand storytelling.

The second instalment of HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” the prequel series to “Game of Thrones,” concluded this weekend, and it seems we won’t see more until 2026. But don’t worry, HBO has another trip to Westeros planned sooner. They are preparing another “Game of Thrones” prequel, titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” for airing next year.

In a period that follows the tale of “House of the Dragon” by several decades and precedes the events portrayed in “Game of Thrones,” the series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is derived from George R.R. Martin’s “Tales of Dunk and Egg” novellas. The initial, six-episode season adapts the first novella, titled “The Hedge Knight.” Here’s a summary of the story as provided by HBO:

A century before the events ofGame of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.

The series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is expected to be smaller and lighter compared to both “Thrones” and “Dragon.” Currently being filmed, its cast is growing with the addition of Henry Ashton, known for his roles in shows like “Outlander,” “A Good Girls Guide to Murder,” and “My Lady Jane.” He will portray Daeron Targaryen, the eldest son of King Maekar I Targaryen. Often referred to as Daeron the Drunken, Daeron isn’t particularly skilled in combat and is known for his prophetic dreams, which may be one reason he indulges in drinking frequently. He appears among several Targaryens in “The Hedge Knight,” a story set during a tournament in Ashford Meadow, located within the Reach.
