Outlander star David Berry disappointed Lord John Grey spinoff fell through, but remains hopeful

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of binge-watching under my belt, I can’t help but express my excitement over the upcoming episodes of Outlander. Having followed this time-traveling saga since its inception, I’ve grown quite fond of the characters and their captivating stories.

Starting tomorrow, Starz will commence broadcasting fresh episodes from the second half of Outlander‘s seventh season. This part of the series will further explore the storylines from Diana Gabaldon’s books. You can look forward to rejoining characters such as Jamie and Claire Fraser (played by Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe), along with the Frasers’ long-standing companions like Lord John Grey (David Berry) and his supposed son, William (Charles Vandervaart). However, it’s worth noting that William is actually Jamie’s son, although he was raised by Lord John Grey.

William hasn’t discovered Jamie as his biological father yet, a revelation that promises plenty of future drama as the new episodes commence. Intriguingly, Lord John Grey has been so richly developed by Gabaldon in her novels and novellas that fans have longed for a spinoff series centering around him. Now, David Berry is candidly discussing the almost-realized opportunity for the first time.

Berry shared with Deadline that he hadn’t discussed this before, but now that the series has ended, he feels more at ease bringing up the topic. During Season 4, there was a plan to film the Lord John series. A writer was assigned and Berry had signed a contract for the series. However, it came down to the wire whether the network would approve it or not. Eventually, they decided against it, as it wasn’t suitable for them at that time. Berry was ready to proceed with the project then, and he’s still prepared to do so now.

Matt [B. Roberts] and Maril [Davis], executive producers on Outlander, have also expressed a lot of interest in doing it. So I guess it really depends on finding a network for it and audience interest in moving forward and doing a spin-off. But definitely, it was something that was on the cards at one point. The fact that it didn’t go ahead was very disappointing at the time. But whether or not it will go ahead again, that’s really in the hands of the audiences, and whether or not there is still an interest in seeing more from this character.

Following the end of season 7’s second half, it’s been revealed that Outlander has only one more season to go, and as Berry hints, they’ve already finished filming it. For quite some time now, Outlander has maintained its popularity, and Starz is capitalizing on this success with a spin-off titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood. This upcoming series will focus on the romantic relationships between Jamie’s parents and Claire’s family members.

Fresh episodes of “Outlander” will begin airing on November 21st. The first season of “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” is scheduled for next year, followed by the eighth and final season of “Outlander.” Starz appears to have a steady supply of “Outlander” content for some time, but with the “Lord John Grey” books available for adaptation, it seems a spinoff focusing on this character could be imminent.
