Outlander season 7 episode 11 review: Uh, what just happened?

Well, Sassenachs, I’ve been a fan of Outlander since its inception and this season 7 episode 11, “A Hundredweight of Stones,” has left me utterly bewildered and heartbroken, just like our dear Claire. It seems that the writers have conjured up yet another plot twist to keep us on our toes.

Alright, Sassenachs! I must ask, are we all still in one piece following the events of Outlander season 7 episode 11, “A Hundredweight of Stones”? It seems that whenever we think this series can’t astonish us any further, it manages to do so. Here’s our take on the episode airing on Starz. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.

Outlander season 7 episode 11 review: Uh, what just happened?

As a devoted fan, I find myself deeply moved as the episode commences with Claire and Lord John tying the knot. Despite our admiration for Lord John, the events that unfold leave me indifferent to his charisma. Jamie and Claire’s bond is unbreakable at this juncture, regardless of any circumstances. They belong together, and my heart aches for their reunion.

As a dedicated admirer, Caitríona Balfe never fails to astound me with her exceptional acting skills. The raw emotion she conveys when portraying the anguish of losing the man she loves is simply captivating. Her impassioned cries and lamentations left me in tears, even though we know Jamie lives on. Clearly, she’s unaware of this fact. Amidst all this heartache, Lord John’s presence brings solace, declaring, “I will not grieve his loss alone tonight.

Lord John. My man. I love you, but this is kind of your fault. No, you should have mourned him alone thank you very much. Claire is as much responsible for her own decisions as well. And look, they are both utterly heartbroken and grieving. But this was not the way to do deal with it. The writers try to explain that Claire and Lord John were both thinking of Jamie as they were in bed together. And later in the episode, Lord John declares “All we have is each other. And if we have each other, then we have him.”

Indeed, I get where you’re coming from, but let me clarify that it’s a bit hard for me to accept this turn of events involving Claire. It leaves me feeling uneasy, and I must admit, it feels like pushing the boundaries of their relationship storyline a bit too much. To be honest, when I picture them in bed together, all I can think about is Phoebe’s “my eyes, my eyes” line from Friends. Thankfully, the show spared us the explicit details, but it’s still tough to reconcile this image with what we know of Claire. It just feels strange and out of place for me.

The romance between Young Ian and Rachel is progressing smoothly as he shares details about Emily and their child. In an endearing moment, he proposes to her, making them adorable couple who bring a touch of lightness amidst the challenging and intricate storyline.

It appears that Brianna has been less prominent since the return of Outlander’s season 7, but her role becomes clear now. A significant and intriguing plot twist unfolds. Contrary to expectations, it wasn’t Rob Cameron who took Jemmy through the stones; instead, this was a ruse to lure Roger and Buck away. This maneuver allowed Bree and Jemmy to assist Rob in finding the gold. Jemmy remains in the 1980s. Wow! And when Brianna hit Rob squarely in the face and knocked him out? Absolutely spot on, girl!

It’s intriguing that Claire chooses to remain in the past despite believing Jamie is lost and potentially in danger from the British. She could return to Bree and Roger, but she feels more at home where she is now. Given all the struggles she and Jamie faced to secure America’s independence for Bree, she wants to stay and witness this historic event as a tribute to him. I must admit, if it were me, I would have returned to be with my daughter. However, her decision is understandable since one might continue questioning why she didn’t return through the Stones.

Claire and Lord John must act as a married couple at various functions to validate their union. Interestingly, it’s revealed that Captain Richardson is secretly a rebel. It’s hard not to feel sympathy for William, knowing he’s unrequited in his feelings for Rachel. He does have a valid point when questioning Lord John’s motives for marrying Claire. Of course, he’s unaware of the entire story and Lord John’s true feelings for Jamie. Charles Vandervaart has been an excellent new addition to the series!

It seems like the final few minutes of this episode suddenly became quite intense and unexpected. I must say, Outlander, you’ve given me quite a jolt with that whiplash! Jamie appears to be alive, yippee! Thank goodness this emotional rollercoaster didn’t last too long. He bursts into the room, and there they are – Jamie and Claire, finally reunited after yet another separation, which feels rather unnecessary at this stage. These reunions always leave me with such a warm, fuzzy feeling. And that tight embrace and the music, they really tugged at my heartstrings.

It’s quite amusing to see those two getting cozy right in front of Sir John, while he looks on uncomfortably. Goodness, this scene certainly feels chaotic. I wonder how they’ll manage to navigate their way out of this predicament. As for Jamie, it seems there are soldiers pursuing him – that’s quite a puzzling development.

In an even more unexpected turn of events, William happens to listen in as Lord John mentions that Jamie’s son is about to arrive home, and it all clicks for him. And lo and behold! The long-kept secret has been revealed at last. As Claire leaves with Jamie, she seems to say her goodbyes to Lord John with a touch of humor, and William witnesses the whole scene. His facial expressions spoke volumes about his feelings. The reference to “stinking Papist” added a delightful touch to the scene as well.

In this episode, the soldiers arrive, yet they’re all pressed for time as William grapples with a massive secret that has dramatically altered his life. Jamie feigns kidnapping Lord John and manages to escape. The climactic scene where Claire can only smile because Jamie is miraculously alive amidst the turmoil surrounding them is priceless. What a thrilling ride this episode was! There’s a lot to ponder and digest. Wow, what a rollercoaster! Episode rating: B.
