Outlander Season 7, Episode 11 review: An unwanted marriage and a shocking character return

As a die-hard Outlander fan who has followed Jamie and Claire’s love story since the very beginning, I must say that this week’s episode was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! The tension was palpable as we watched Claire marry Lord John and sleep with him – all while knowing deep down that Jamie wasn’t really dead.

In last week’s Outlander episode, I found myself in a rather unusual state – one could say intrigued, but ‘intrigued’ might not fully capture my feelings due to the heavy apprehension that gripped me after discovering Jamie (Sam Heughan) had supposedly passed away. Yet, I persisted in clinging to hope as I delved into this new episode titled “A Hundredweight of Stones.

Besides discovering Jamie’s rumored death in last week’s episode, we also found out that Lord John (David Berry) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) are compelled to marry urgently. This is predominantly because she is being charged as a spy, and in order to shield her, this is a necessary move they have to make.

What about Jamie? He is going to come back, right? They can’t quite possibly do this…can they?

Till death us do part…

True to anticipation, the episode proceeds at a brisk pace as Lord John and Claire end up getting married. It appears that there are few alternatives, and if safeguarding Claire is involved, Lord John is prepared to go to great lengths – a decision particularly significant for Jamie, as it holds immense importance to him.

Despite the transition not being simple, Claire is deeply grieving the loss of her cherished spouse. Life without him seems empty and unbearable to her. In a particularly moving portrayal by Balfe this season, she conveys intense sorrow and pain as Claire mourns Jamie. In fact, Claire considers ending her life or at least ponders it, until she hears Jamie’s voice in her mind, preventing her from taking that drastic step.

As Claire experiences her agony, a raw, emotional sound emerges. Below, Lord John Grey, who is coping with his loss in his unique manner, listens to her cries and lamentations. He harbored a deep affection for that man, and their desired love story never fully unfolded between them.

Lord John chooses not to bear the sorrow of Jamie’s demise on his own and goes to be with Claire in her chamber instead. There, they share a sequence of intense, emotionally raw instances, expressing their anguish through shouts, tears, and physical outbursts. At one point, Claire asserts that Lord John has no claim over the grief of Jamie’s passing.

Unexpectedly, their heartfelt interaction culminated in them sharing a bed, an event that seemed unforeseen as it was not expected given Lord John’s self-identification as a gay man. However, the intense emotions stirred by Jamie’s loss drew him towards Claire, a gesture driven by both passion and grief.

The following morning, they both awaken feeling a tad uncomfortable yet slightly freer than the previous night. As she gathers more information about Lord John’s past relationships with men, Claire manages to regain her footing – although it pains her deeply that Jamie is no longer in their world and has left her alone to navigate it.

The mystery of Rob Cameron

Currently, we find ourselves alongside Brianna (Sophie Skelton), who is grappling with her family’s absence, finding solace nowhere in Scotland. Calling her parents isn’t an option, and the sense of isolation she experiences is vividly depicted by Skelton.

Nevertheless, events take an unsettling, chaotic, and utterly surprising twist as it turns out to be none other than Rob Cameron (Chris Fulton) who appears in her kitchen. Just like everyone else, you might have wondered: isn’t he meant to be in the past with Jemmy?

It appears that Roger was tricked into departing without Brianna, leaving her exposed, as part of a scheme by Rob. The intention is for Brianna to lure Jemmy to reveal the location of the gold. Since they need to travel to the U.S. to execute this plan, it seems that Brianna has no other choice but to accompany them.

This is starting to make me nervous, ya’ll!

Young Ian and Rachel

In this episode, I found myself drawn to the storyline involving Young Ian (John Bell) and Rachel (Izzy Meikle-Small). As Young Ian grapples with the loss of Uncle Jamie, he shares his past with Rachel in a way that feels deeply personal and moving. This part of the plot had a touching, private quality that resonated with me.

For the very first time, Rachel discovers that Young Ian was once married, not just that, but his former spouse is still alive and they have a child together. This piece of information is overwhelming for anyone, but especially so for Rachel, who hails from a humble Quaker community. In her case, it’s an extraordinary revelation.

But that doesn’t stop her from loving Ian. It makes things complicated, but their love is as strong as ever, even if their religions do not align.

Roger and Buck continue to search for “the fairy man”

In the year 1739, Scotland serves as the backdrop for Roger (Richard Rankin) and Buck (Diarmid Murtagh) as they persist in their quest to locate the being believed to be Roger’s father, not Rob Cameron. Their journey takes them to a vendor of precious gems who provides them with some valuable insights regarding the elusive fairy man.

It’s quite plausible that the fairy man might be Roger’s biological father, considering the military insignia found and the unfortunate circumstance of his father’s plane going down in open waters, with no recovery of his remains afterwards.

The investigation guides them towards a man who is with two other individuals who appear uncomfortable upon encountering Roger or Buck. These men seem uneasy by their arrival and grow tense when Roger inquires about the jacket on the tree that belongs to the man. Given it’s an RAF pilot’s coat, they surmise it must be his father’s, don’t you think?

Roger ponders over how the man came to possess the jacket, as it’s unusual for a Royal Air Force pilot like himself to part with his coat. In his opinion, only two scenarios seem plausible: either the man’s father has passed away, or he was forced to sell his coat.

We will have to tune in next week to see what happens…

What else happened in Outlander Season 7, Episode 11?

It appears that Lord John’s nephew Henry and his beloved, Mercy, have made a significant announcement: they are deeply in love and plan to wed. This news troubles Lord John, as it might lead to severe repercussions for Henry, given Mercy’s reputation as a rebel.

This situation stirs up some tension between John and Claire, as it deepens when Lord John gives Claire an extravagant dress to wear at a refined dinner in support of the Loyalist cause, which she dislikes. She feels annoyed about having to back this cause in such a manner, but Lord John insists that they must unite for each other and preserve Jamie’s legacy.

Claire gathers the strength to show up at the gathering, only to have the Captain encourage her to contemplate becoming a spy under his command. His aim is for Claire to gather information about Lord John and his sibling, enabling them to discern their intentions and act accordingly.

Does Claire say yes to his proposal? OF COURSE NOT!

Ending of Outlander Season 7, Episode 11 explained

That choice has consequences. The next day, Lord John is inundated with a lot of communication and requests. He urges Claire that they must be a united front, but before he can dive deep into this conversation, a familiar voice comes shouting up the stairs.

Ah, we recognize that voice! It’s none other than Jamie’s! Great news, everyone – Jamie is alive and kicking!

It seems he didn’t embark on that vessel, thus avoiding being lost at sea. Consequently, he’s alive and in good health. This fantastic news brings us immense joy, even though we had hoped for this outcome. However, it doesn’t diminish our happiness knowing he’s safe.

Nevertheless, an uncomfortable situation arises due to his wife remarrying to Lord John and subsequently engaging in a relationship with him as well.

In the midst of everything, Jamie and Claire can’t linger because British soldiers are in pursuit. They burst into the house intending to seize him. Meanwhile, as this unfolds, Jamie and Claire leave the room to find William waiting outside. Strangely enough, this encounter wouldn’t have been surprising under normal circumstances. Yet, just a moment ago, Lord John mentioned William as Jamie’s son. Hearing this leaves William stunned, but there’s no time for contemplation because Jamie swiftly uses Lord John as a decoy for an escape plan by pretending to harm him.

The scene concludes with Claire grinning at the turmoil, yet it seems quite probable that her smile will transform into uneasy gazes and discomfiture as she needs to inform Jamie about the events that transpired since his apparent demise.
