As a movie buff with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must confess that Outlander has been one of those rare series that has managed to captivate me from its very inception. The depth of character development, the richness of history, and the sheer passion that oozes from every frame have made it a series I look forward to with bated breath each new season.

In the upcoming month, “Outlander” will come back with the second half of its seventh season. The Fraser couple, Jamie and Claire, are on their way back to Scotland, while their offspring encounter a distressing family crisis in the future. After this, viewers will experience one last break (or hiatus) known as Droughtlander, before they delve into the eighth and concluding season. Filming for this final chapter was completed just last month.

Undoubtedly, the conclusion of this lengthy television series is stirring up feelings among fans, actors, and production staff. Caitriona Balfe, who has portrayed Clare Fraser since day one, opened up about her close bond with costar Sam Heughan (Jamie). “Our friendship and our professional partnership have been incredibly special and significant for us,” she shared at New York Comic Con, as reported by the Scottish Daily Express. “We made a promise at the start that we would always support each other, and I believe we’ve kept that promise.” She added, “It has truly been an honor to be part of it for so long.

One might assume that since the last season has been filmed and farewells have been said, the cast and crew would be aware of the series finale, but surprisingly, that’s not necessarily accurate, as per executive producer Maril Davis.

According to the Daily Record, Davis mentioned at NYCC that they’re trying to keep the script for the series finale secret to minimize accidental spoilers. However, it seems like they have more reasons than just that. Davis stated, “Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts hasn’t decided the ending yet.” They’re deliberately doing this because there have been leaks in the past.

It seems logical to wonder if they’ve filmed all of Season 8, which includes the series finale, then how can they not have determined the ending? One possibility is that the ending could be altered during post-production. Maybe there’s a crucial element they haven’t finalized about whether to include or exclude it in the final cut.

Outlander ending: Books vs show

A distinctive aspect of the finale for the TV series ‘Outlander’ is that it departs from the ending envisioned by author Diana Gabaldon in her book series. Notably, there’s one more book to be published in the series, meaning that the show will conclude its storyline before the books do. The producers of the show have opted to create a unique ending for the series, rather than adhere to what Gabaldon has planned. Remarkably, the author herself has expressed that she is not displeased by this decision.

At New York Comic Con, Davis explained, “We took great care. We didn’t wish to offend her. There’s another story waiting. Therefore, we’re wrapping it up as is, aiming to be considerate and not conclude it in a manner that she might disapprove of.

This further supports the idea that the series will conclude differently from the original books. It seems as though Davis has knowledge of the ending, but this appears to conflict with Roberts’ statements about the decision being undecided. However, it could simply be a matter of subtle details.

Without a doubt, the latter part of Season 7 starts airing on November 22nd (Friday) and concludes on January 10th. After that, we’ll find ourselves in another lengthy hiatus before the final season begins. This ample duration should provide Roberts with sufficient time to make any necessary decisions.
