Outlander author says the final season will be different to the book

As a seasoned Outlander fan who has followed the journey of Jamie and Claire since the first pages of the original novel, I must say I find myself both intrigued and apprehensive about the upcoming changes to the series’ ending. Diana Gabaldon’s decision to diverge from her own storyline in order to fit within the constraints of the final season is a testament to the adaptability required in this ever-evolving medium, but it leaves me wondering what twists and turns lie ahead for our beloved characters.

Diana Gabaldon, the writer of Outlander, has shared that the television adaptation may conclude with a distinct finale compared to the original books.

Since 1991, the author has been crafting a time-travel romantic drama centered around Jamie and Claire Fraser. The tenth novel, set to release, will mark the conclusion of their main storyline. Currently, each season adapts one book, but with season 8 confirmed as the final installment, some adjustments are necessary.

As a dedicated gamer, I hopped onto my Facebook feed to get some updates from my favorite game’s creator. She shared that due to a shorter season than usual and three unpublished books yet to be adapted, the game’s storyline might veer off in an entirely new direction. This could mean some unexpected twists and turns ahead!

As a devoted reader, I can confidently say that while the upcoming sequel may resonate with fans, it likely won’t mirror Book 10 closely due to space constraints.

“Regardless of them having the entire book, the series wouldn’t mirror it closely due to its nature. With just 10 episodes for Season 8, only around 10% of each book can be adapted per season in the typical book-to-show transformation.”

As an avid reader, I can hardly contain my excitement for Season 8! They’ve got a wealth of material from the ninth book, “[Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone],” along with a preliminary outline for Book 10 and roughly three-quarters of Book 8 that remains untapped. Translating all this rich content into just one hour episodes without losing coherence is no small feat!

“In essence, they’ve followed a similar approach used in the previous books. They’ve selected particular scenes and narratives, and structured them within a loose, coherent framework to link them logically.”

In another remark, Gabaldon voiced her anticipation that readers will appreciate how both adaptations of Outlander conclude.

Within the very same piece, the writer mentioned that they had quoted a section from Book 10, pointing out that, at that point in time, the book was yet to be titled.

The work for the eighth series commenced earlier in the current year, and recently, a rehearsal for one of the concluding episodes (marking the 101st overall) was held. However, there’s more to look forward to, as we’re yet to air season 7 part 2 by the end of this year.

As the main event winds down, I can hardly contain my excitement for a spin-off series called “Blood of My Blood.” This intriguing tale promises to delve into the lives of Jamie and Claire’s beloved parents, offering a captivating prequel that will surely keep us hooked!

In the United States, you can catch Outlander on Starz, and in the UK it streams via MGM+ on Amazon Prime Video Channels. The Season 7 part 2 premiere is set for November 22.
