Outer Banks season 4 episode 9 recap: ‘The Storm’

Outer Banks season 4 episode 9 recap: ‘The Storm’

As a fan who’s been sailing through the tumultuous waters of Outer Banks since its inception, I must say that this latest episode was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! The storm sequence had me on the edge of my seat, heart pounding, praying for our beloved Pogues. But hey, we all know that you can’t kill a Pogue, right? They’re made of sterner stuff than that!

In the ninth episode of Outer Banks‘s fourth season, the Pogues take it easy and keep a low profile following the events of the previous episode. It’s important to note that Pope (played by Jonathan Daviss) and JJ (portrayed by Rudy Pankow) are still on the run from authorities.

In a scenario, writer J. Anthony Crane’s character, Groff, contacts the sheriff as he’s concerned about the whereabouts of Hollis Robinson (Brianna Brown). Upon reaching her residence, they discover her lifeless and murdered body. However, Groff attempts to falsely accuse JJ and the Pogues of the crime. Yet, this time, Shoupe (Callum Moss) perceives his deceit.

The deputies locate JJ and The Pogues, but they end up stealing their boat and concoct a scheme to voyage to Morocco. To execute this plan, they simply need to pilfer a larger watercraft.

While sailing through the marina with an intention to steal a boat, Rafe (Drew Starkey) inadvertently catches the Pogues discussing a trip to Morocco. As the Pogues’ attempt at boat theft falls short, Rafe seizes an opportunity by striking a deal with his favorite OBX character, Barry (Nicholas Cirillo). In exchange for a luxurious watercraft, he acquires a deep-sea vessel that Barry owns instead.

Unfortunately, the Pogues get into a prolonged standoff with the deputies. Fortunately, Mike Carrera (Marland Burke), who believes JJ wouldn’t really harm anyone, disarms one of the deputies during the exchange of fire towards the Pogues. The shot hits their boat, causing it to gradually lose air.

Rafe proposes to Sofia

Rafe briefly stops by Sofia’s place before attempting to persuade the Pogues to travel with him to Morocco. He proposes to Sofia (Fiona Palomo), but she was about to reveal her secret actions regarding Hollis. However, Rafe seems unfazed, which I consider a step forward. Despite being a questionable character, he is gaining more fan support this season.

Sofia consents to wed him, and they start mapping out grand schemes once he arrives with his funds within a fortnight.

If that event isn’t a fatal blow to Rafe, then I don’t know what could be. I haven’t watched the final episode yet, but it seems like bad news for Rafe. Here’s hoping he manages to overcome whatever peril is lurking in Morocco.

The Pogues make a deal with Sheriff Shoupe and head for Morocco with Rafe

In the heat of the moment, I’m starting to see Groff in a different light – he’s no good, a deceitful character, almost like a con artist. With that realization, I make a beeline for Bonner’s Landing, the place where the Pogues’ boat suddenly loses its air, leaving them stranded.

Following a significant altercation among the Pogues, it’s Shoupe who arrives on the scene. Attempting to apprehend JJ and Pope, he understands that it’s actually Groff who committed the murder of Hollis.

Afterward, Rafe arrives for a three-cornered agreement with Shoupe. He reveals that it was Groff who murdered Hollis, Wes Genrette, and the corpse discovered in the dunes. Shoupe breaks ranks and consents to dispatch the Pogues and Rafe to track down Groff in Morocco instead.

It’s quite strategic of Rafe and Shoupe; Rafe has agreed to disclose past events upon his return home, and it seems they have reached an understanding on this matter.

Before their arrival, the Pogues and Rafe set sail for Morocco on a ship prior to departing Poguelandia. As they go, there’s a brief recollection of the Pogues enjoying themselves, feasting together – reminiscent of a scene from the Fast and Furious series. In the Pogue clan, you’re not just friends, you’re family!

The Pogues lock Rafe in the bathroom on the way to Morocco

The Pogues are skeptical about Rafe, and rightly so. He claims he’s not after the Blue Crown or the treasure, but wants only to locate Groff for his debt. However, JJ interrupts him mid-sentence, instead choosing to knock him unconscious. As they journey towards Morocco, the Pogues imprison Rafe in the bathroom and leave him bound for several days.

As they journey along, the Pogues occasionally enjoy themselves, yet there are moments when things aren’t so cheerful. The atmosphere on the open sea carries a hint of Poguelandia, as they manage to catch their meals, but JJ is struggling significantly. He’s constantly drinking and his behavior towards everyone, even Pope who rescued him, and John B (Chase Stokes) who tries to discourage his drinking and encourage him to contribute to the group and get himself together, is abrasive.

Times have officially changed. John B tells JJ that Sarah (Madelyn Cline) is pregnant and he’s going to be a dad, and he wants him to be the godfather. JJ tells him that he’s going to be a terrible father, just like their dads. It’s a crushing blow to John B and their friendship.

JJ makes up for it shortly, though.

Groff joins the Lupine Corsairs in Morocco

Back in Morocco, Groff reteams with the Lupine Corsairs. His objective is to interact with the Captain (Pollyanna McIntosh) and Lightner (Rigo Sanchez), exchanging the map and a device for deciphering it.

It turned out that they allowed Groff to redeem himself for betraying them by giving him the opportunity to betray the Pogues, with a rendezvous planned in Morocco. Frankly, I can’t stand these individuals!

Sarah almost dies, but JJ saves her life

In this episode titled “The Storm,” things get real as we navigate treacherous waters towards Morocco. As Captain Pope and Cleo struggle to keep the ship on course, John B battles the tempest at the helm, but it’s a fight he can’t quite win. A monstrous gust throws him off balance, and the ship loses momentum. Sensing trouble, Sarah races to aid John B, only to be swept away by another giant wave. She plunges into the ocean, but thankfully, JJ is on hand. He quickly flings a life buoy and dives in after her, braving the stormy seas to save our dear Sarah.

For quite some time now, I’ve been unsure if JJ and Sarah were still among us or not. Then, the remaining members of The Pogues experienced a crash-landing along the Moroccan coastline. We scoured the beach tirelessly for any sign of them, waiting an entire day. Our hearts heavy with despair, we believed them to be gone forever. Yet, miraculously, hope was restored when JJ and Sarah appeared on the shore, battered but alive.

JJ AND SARAH ARE ALIVE!

YOU CAN’T KILL A POGUE, right? That’s the saying!

Following a heartfelt embrace between John B and Sarah, John B and JJ experience a significant moment. It appears that JJ has recently saved his wife’s life, as well as their unborn child. Undoubtedly, John B will forever be indebted to him. “Brothers for life,” John B declares. They set aside their past disagreements. This emotional development of the season comes at a crucial moment, favoring the Pogues.

There’s still a treasure to find and vengeance achieved in the Outer Banks season 4 finale, “The Blue Crown.” Let’s get to it!
