Outer Banks season 4 episode 8 recap: ‘Family Plot’

Outer Banks season 4 episode 8 recap: ‘Family Plot’

As a die-hard fan of the Outer Banks series who’s spent countless hours binge-watching this captivating tale unfold, I must say that episode 10 was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride! The twists and turns, the suspenseful moments, and the heartbreaking revelations had me on the edge of my seat.

Following a narrow miss with a crucial map from some unsavory characters, the Pogues exhibit their distinctive behavior in the opening scene of Outer Banks season 4 episode 8, “Family Plot.” Instead of Sarah, they engage in an activity typical of them – smoking something and attempting to decipher the map leading to the Blue Crown at Poguelandia.

It might have been wiser for them not to go home immediately, as Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) appears a few hours later in need of aid. Moved by his situation, JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow), a compassionate individual, attempts to assist him.

It has been disclosed that Groff has obtained the Mogador scroll, which functions as a map. However, he cautions them that the Lupine Corsairs, known for their ruthless mercenary work, will not let this matter rest. Consequently, the Pogues find themselves in a precarious situation.

Groff narrates an account of the Blue Crown, explaining its history and how pirate Murad acquired it. He shares details about the Blue Crown, including its purpose, and mentions his own quest for finding it. He discusses how Elizabeth Teach discovered a scroll, followed a map, pondered over a hidden vault in the Moroccan desert that was believed to contain the Blue Crown. Unfortunately, she and Blackbeard didn’t get the opportunity to verify its authenticity.

Groff also shares that the lens to view the map is in Larissa’s grave! What the hell, man.

Captain Dalia kills the crew member who lost the scroll

With Pollyanna McIntosh as the Captain and Rigo Sanchez as Lightner, the team executes the killing of an individual named Samir due to his failure to secure the scroll. The Captain has a strategy in mind, but before setting sail, they prepare their vessel. This doesn’t bode well for the Pogues!

I have no faith whatsoever in Groff’s character, but I am confident that he is truthful when he warns us about the approaching Lupine Corsairs for the Pogues.

Pope’s dad tries to convince Pope to enlist in the military

In this version, Pope (Jonathan Daviss) and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) are awakened by a knock at the door, which turns out to be Pope’s father. Heyward (E. Roger Mitchell) encourages Pope to enlist right away in order to demonstrate his commitment to the correct path to the judge. Additionally, Heyward informs Pope that Cleo cannot remain with them, but this is not what Pope desires.

Pope looks stressed, man, and I don’t envy him. What is a Pogue to do?

Sarah tells John B that she is pregnant

Sarah Cameron (played by Madelyn Cline) reveals to John B, who’s engrossed in a map and plotting their upcoming journey to Morocco, that she’s pregnant. She admits her fear, but John B reassures her, saying they’ll deal with it as they’ve always done before.

I don’t know if I love this pregnancy storyline, but we’ll keep it moving.

Simultaneously, JJ confides in Kiara (Madison Bailey) about the events that transpired. She queries if Groff is truly his father, and JJ reveals that he suspects Chandler might be his real dad instead. This revelation adds to the turmoil given the current circumstances.

It seems that Groff plans to deceive the Pogues by taking their scroll without them suspecting a thing.

Pope runs away before he enlists in the military

The Pope faces a challenging choice, though he’s uncertain if it’s the correct one. Early in the day, Cleo stealthily departs from his quarters. In essence, they bid each other a farewell, albeit an unconventional one. Indeed, it was quite a dramatic departure.

We know these two aren’t going to be separated for too long!

Afterward, Pope accompanies his uncle and father for military enlistment, but just before he puts his signature on the enlistment documents, a sudden panic overtakes him. He flees as swiftly as possible, but his ankle monitor betrays his location to the police. It remains to be seen how he’ll manage to escape this predicament, but we have no doubt that he will!

JJ and Chandler go to Larissa’s grave together

While JJ and Chandler embark on a short father-son quest to locate a special telescope for map viewing, Groff seizes the opportunity, drawing upon his past as a Pogue, to draw nearer to JJ. It’s heart-wrenching anticipation, knowing the pain that lies ahead. Of course, Groff is bound to shatter JJ’s heart.

They break into Larissa’s tomb, but it’s a setup, of course. Groff calls the Sheriff on JJ while they wait. Inside the tomb, JJ and Groff open Larissa’s casket, but Groff claims he can’t do it. When JJ opens the casket, he takes the necklace. JJ asks how Larissa died, and Groff says that she drowned. There’s something wrong here. I wonder if that’s actually Larissa’s body and if she’s even dead.

As a gamer, I attempted to snatch the mystical pendant from JJ, but then, I decided to return it to him. However, an officer of the law was present, yet I seized the artifact and imprisoned him within the ancient crypt.

Groff kills Hollis

In this scenario, Groff first secures JJ within the tomb and proceeds to pilfer a Twinkie. Later, he ventures back to Poguelandia, where he retrieves the scroll. Now, with the necessary artifact (lens), he can decipher the map’s contents.

In simpler terms, it appears that Kiara encounters someone, challenges him, but then gets knocked unconscious by Groff and is confined within a refrigerator at Poguelandia. The situation seems quite distressing.

Later, Groff heads to retrieve JJ from the mausoleum, with an additional stop at Hollis’ place (portrayed by Brianna Brown) en route. Groff attempts to swindle Hollis for Rafe’s money, having deceived her about Goat Island. However, his scheme is foiled as she brandishes a firearm, catching him in his web of lies. She realizes that he was not truthful about the night Wes was killed as well. Throughout their interaction, Groff has been dishonest, and Hollis intends to report him for his deceit.

Groff diverts her attention, snatches the gun, and fatally shoots Hollis before making off with the cash. He additionally takes the keys to her yacht, stashes the gun inside a Twinkie, thus setting up JJ and the Pogues for the crime, before he departs the scene on the yacht with JJ. This isn’t good, not in the least. Since JJ didn’t enter the building, he remains clueless about his father’s identity or his current actions.

Sarah and John B try to get legally married

Meanwhile, as Sarah and John B attempt to get married, an unexpected obstacle arises when the office is inaccessible due to the town being damaged by rioters. Simultaneously, Kelce (Deion Smith) and Ruthie (Mia Challis), Topper’s partner, confront Sarah and John B while they’re searching for JJ. It’s quite bizarre! Cleo deflates Kelce’s truck tires, causing them to flee through the town until they encounter Pope, who is on the run.

A police officer discovers what appears to be Pope and The Pogues hiding out in a boathouse, but somehow, they manage to remove their ankle monitors using garden shears, followed by the theft of a boat. Now, they’ve escaped once more!

Fortunately, they make it back to Poguelandia and discover Kie inside the refrigerator! After sharing her story with them, they set out to locate JJ and alert him about the situation.

Rafe reports Chandler Groff for stealing $400K

In town, Rafe Cameron (Drew Starkey) shows up at the Sherriff’s Office and presses charges against Chandler Groff and Hollis Robinson for stealing nearly half a million dollars.

Sheriff Shoupe (Callum Moss) hears the report and realizes that Groff is actually responsible for killing Wes Genrette (David Jensen). Hollis was Groff’s alibi. Finally, Shoupe has figured this thing out after years of practice.

Unfortunately, it’s just a little bit too late.

The Pogues rescue JJ after Groff tries to kill him

In a conversation held over the ocean, Groff and JJ discuss a map and a lens. Now they’re aware of the location of the Blue Crown. However, Groff attempts to persuade JJ for a trip to Morocco. Yet, JJ is wise to his intentions. He perceives that Groff is being dishonest and challenges him on it.

It’s clear that JJ believes Groff murdered Larissa, but a flashback reveals it was indeed Groff who committed the crime. In a shocking turn of events, Groff shoves JJ off the boat, causing him to injure himself on the anchor. Later, Groff abandons JJ in the ocean while he escapes on the boat, leaving JJ stranded in the middle of nowhere.

The heart-wrenching event, which we all anticipated given Groff’s involvement, leaves JJ feeling disappointed yet again as he’s continually let down by those who aren’t part of the Pogues.

Fortunately, it was the Pogues, his true kin, who came to the rescue, as JJ, drifting on his back, found himself amidst the vast ocean.

On that particular night, JJ takes responsibility for the actions of Groff. Granted, it’s not an ideal situation, but JJ was under someone else’s influence. Here’s hoping he won’t repeat his past mistakes.

In the closing moments of the episode, John B and Sarah are reclining on the pier, gazing up at the night sky. John B expresses his readiness to provide for her and their family, and they agree to pursue this mysterious Blue Crown venture before establishing a settled life. However, Sarah confesses her fear.

Wow, another fantastic installment! Just two episodes left now. Let’s dive into the fourth season’s second-to-last episode of “Outer Banks,” titled “The Storm.
