Outer Banks season 4 episode 7 recap: ‘Mothers and Fathers’

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through countless twists and turns in virtual worlds, I must say that Outer Banks season 4 is giving me a rollercoaster ride like no other! The tension between JJ and Groff, the revelations about Sarah’s pregnancy, and the Pogues’ relentless pursuit of justice – it’s all too exciting to handle!

In the seventh episode of Outer Banks season 4, we pick up exactly where the previous episode left off. JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow) makes his way back to Goat Island for a confrontation with Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane), who he now believes is his father. As he gazes upon a portrait of Larissa Genrette adorning the wall, it’s evident that the likeness between her and him catches his eye.

JJ queries Groff about being his dad, and Groff refutes it. Later on, JJ discloses that Luke Maybank (Gary Weeks) had informed him of Groff being his father. Despite Groff’s continued attempts to deceive, JJ presses for the truth. When asked about what happened to his child, Groff claims the baby drowned but they never discovered the body.

It’s a very weird exchange, but they don’t have long before things hit the fan.

As a fervent admirer, I find myself back on Goat Island, teaming up with Captain Dalia (Pollyanna McIntosh) and Lightner, seeking retribution against Chandler for his heinous act of taking down our comrade, Omar. My fellow crew member, Demp (Nate Bynum), emits a warning blast from an air horn to signal Groff about the impending arrival of Dalia and Lightner.

In a turn of events, Groff hands over a single-bullet gun to JJ, and they both attempt to flee. They manage to get away on an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and eventually reach a concealed boathouse. This boathouse houses The Albatross, a boat rumored to have sunk with Larissa aboard. However, when JJ attempts to start the boat, it remains unresponsive.

JJ attempts to swim the channel, but Groff claims he won’t be able to do it alone. Later, Groff reveals that he is actually JJ’s father, causing JJ to change direction for an unexplained reason. However, instead of continuing his swim, JJ becomes enraged and decides to physically confront Groff, thinking he had been deceived. This altercation is interrupted by Lightner and his team before any serious harm occurs.

They take Groff and JJ captive and return to the ship while they lock them in the hold.

Pope gets out on house arrest

In the meantime, Pope Heyward (Jonathan Daviss) attends a hearing and is permitted to serve house arrest. As a condition of his freedom prior to the trial, he must reside at home with his parents and avoid contact with friends. Unfortunately for Pope, his parents have decided not to allow Cleo (Carlacia Grant) to stay with him or visit until after the trial has concluded.

After some time apart, Cleo manages to reconnect with Pope as she secretly returns. With his father demanding that Pope enlist in the military, it seems that their day-to-day relationship might be compromised, since such a commitment could potentially keep them apart.

Sarah is pregnant!

Back in the Outer Banks, the Pogues minus Pope search for JJ, but they can’t find him.

As they search for JJ, Sarah Cameron (played by Madelyn Cline) experiences a sense of unease and steps into a ransacked convenience store. Inside, she discovers a pregnancy test kit. Curious, Sarah grabs two from the bathroom and takes them to confirm her suspicions – she’s pregnant!

Kiara Carrera (Madison Bailey) peeks into the bathroom since it’s taking a while, finding tests there which briefly unsettles her. She reassures Sarah by saying she’ll make a wonderful mother, while John B will be just okay as a dad – a tender moment ensues.

Standing outside the convenience store, I, a gamer at heart, find myself locked in conversation with John B (Chase Stokes), while he waits for Sarah. In a surprising twist, Topper (Austin North) confesses that the mastermind behind the land rezoning plan was none other than him. Just as Kie and Sarah attempt to whisk John B away, I can’t shake off the feeling that Topper might not be receiving the happily-ever-after he had envisioned.

The Pogues rescue JJ

Eventually, Kie deduces that it’s probable JJ headed to Goat Island to face off with Groff following his discovery of JJ’s true parentage. Later on, she confides in John B and Sarah about this revelation regarding JJ.

As they journey to Goat Island for answers, they come across a massive ship where Captain and Lightner seem to be detaining JJ and Groff.

It’s been discovered that Groff took the Captain’s Log, which he then used to guide the Pogues to Blackbeard’s ship and murder one of his crew members named Omar. Now, they plan to execute Groff for taking a life within their group. Attempting to evade responsibility, Groff falsely accuses JJ of the crime instead.

That’s so cold!

JJ attempts to clarify the situation to the Captain, yet it seems she’s not convinced. They spend a moment pondering their next steps regarding them.

Man, it’s a hair’s breadth away from John B, Sarah, and Kie setting their own boat ablaze! Not the one they aimed for, no, but their very vessel! This season of the show is absolutely wild, can’t get enough of it!

Next, they discover JJ’s slingshot and successfully hurl a firebomb at the vessel, resulting in one crew member’s death. With the commotion ensuing, John B manages to board the ship and encounters JJ. They engage in a struggle with some of the adversaries before leaping off the boat. Fortunately, Kie and Sarah arrive in time to rescue them.

Oh, and John B stole the scroll that leads to the Blue Crown! They’re – and I quote – “back in the G game, baby!”

Groff lives and swims back to Goat Island

Amidst the turmoil, Groff manages to evade both the Captain and Lightner. Or, it seems they granted him freedom. Stay tuned to discover more! Upon returning to Goat Island, however, his mood was far from cheerful.

What a bad dude! This is probably the worst villain we’ve seen in Outer Banks so far. He’s somehow even a worse dad than Ward Cameron and Luke Maybank by a wide, wide, margin. He truly sucks.

Anyway, on to Outer Banks season 4 episode 8!
