Outer Banks season 4 episode 5 recap: ‘Albatross’
As someone who’s spent a fair share of time chasing treasure maps and secrets, I can’t help but feel a kinship with these young adventurers from the Outer Banks. Their determination, their courage, and their unwavering spirit are truly inspiring. The latest episode was a rollercoaster ride, filled with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat.
It all comes down to this! Only one episode of Outer Banks season 4 part 1 left, and it’s a good one.
Towards the end of episode 4 in the fourth season of Outer Banks, Sheriff Shoupe, played by Callum Moss, appeared at JJ’s house for a conversation with him. John B, portrayed by Chase Stokes, was grappling with a tough decision. Thankfully, he chose wisely!
Shoupe doesn’t find Terrance’s body, but he knows JJ is lying about Wes
In the fifth episode of the fourth season of “Outer Banks,” titled “Albatross,” Shoupe inquires from JJ regarding the incident at the Break, where JJ had threatened the Kooks after Ruthie attempted to hit them with a vehicle. Later, Shoupe probes JJ about the events that transpired at the hyperbaric chamber.
As a gamer, I’m recounting the situation: Shoupe flips through photos of some mystery dude washed ashore, showing them to me, JJ. I honestly didn’t recognize the guy. He then quizzes me about my whereabouts on Saturday night, the same night Wes Genrette (David Jensen) met his end. In a moment of panic, I fib and claim I was holed up at home the entire time. Shoupe, however, wasn’t buying it, knowing full well I was pulling the wool over his eyes. With a stern nod, he orders tails on us Pogues as he departs.
Things are not good in Poguelandia!
Rafe makes the deal with Hollis
On a yacht at the marina, Hollis (Brianna Brown) and Rafe (Drew Starkey) finalize the papers. Curious about the other partners, Rafe inquires for more details. She replies that once the funds are transferred, he will have the opportunity to meet everyone.
It’s puzzling why he fails to notice or suspect that things are amiss, but perhaps he’s choosing to overlook the red flags and focusing on a larger goal instead. That’s usually their tactic, Rafe.
Rafe’s redemption storyline isn’t fully resolved, but I can’t help feeling sympathetic towards him. He’s grappling with numerous challenges, and soon, he might be exploited for his value. However, not entirely.
The Pogues pay tribute to Terrance
As JJ finishes preparing the Twinkie for the Pogues’ journey to Charleston, in search of something at the Half Moon Battery, they decide to honor Cleo’s mentor by taking Terrance (Terence Rosemore) out on a sea voyage.
Fortunately, they managed to elude the watchful eyes that Shoupe had arranged, thus avoiding detection as they discarded a corpse from the vessel.
In a makeshift funeral setting, Pope (Jonathan Daviss) endeavors to reach out to Cleo (Carlacia Grant), yet she’s not open to consolation at this moment. Instead, she yearns for retribution.
Lightner and the bad guys are also headed for Charleston
It’s unclear who the individuals are, but Rigo Sanchez (Lightner) boards the vessel without Terrance. Notably, he is carrying the amulet, and the captain, an Australian woman, instructs them to navigate towards Half Moon Battery in Charleston.
One member of the team speaks up assertively, hinting at seeking retribution for Omar, the individual found deceased on the shoreline. He claims they’ve identified the perpetrator, yet the commander instructs them to depart instead.
It seems clear that they need to keep searching for the Blue Crown on behalf of someone, otherwise they could face consequences. This raises curiosity; maybe there’s a hidden party interested in this artifact whose identity remains unknown.
Demp delivers JJ a letter from Wes Genrette
While JJ completes working on the Twinkie, Demp (Nate Bynum), the caretaker at Goat Island, emerges unexpectedly from the bushes. He gives JJ a letter that’s addressed to “Master JJ Maybank” from Wes. JJ finds it difficult, but fortunately, he manages to decipher the cursive writing in the letter.
JJ is setting sail, having penned a message for the Pogues on the Twinkie.
Rafe pledges to make things right for his family and Sofia
Rafe escorts Sofia (Fiona Palomo) to Goat Island. On the sandy shore, he expresses regret over their past issues, including any misunderstandings within his family circle, as well as how he may have mistreated her. However, he promises to rectify things with Sarah moving forward.
Sofia makes an effort to dissuade Rafe from going through with the agreement, yet he informs her that he has already arranged for a bank transfer. The look of remorse on her face is evident!
JJ finds his dad, Luke, at Barracuda Mike’s house
It’s unclear what JJ is doing, but he inquires from Barracuda Mike (Justin Matthew Smith) if he knows the whereabouts of his father, Luke (Gary Weeks). Barracuda Mike promises to relay a message to Luke for JJ to contact him. Deceitfully, JJ claims he’s selling something and suggests that Luke might need some cash.
Later on, Luke phones JJ, yet JJ identifies the distinctive bark of Barracuda Mike’s pet dog. It turns out that instead of being in South America, Luke is currently residing at Barracuda Mike’s place. This discovery leaves JJ with some pressing questions.
Luke expresses regret for being absent and explains that he was trying to protect JJ from potential trouble. However, upon seeing a letter from Wes, JJ shares it with Luke. The letter instructs JJ to inquire about “Albatross” from his father. Despite JJ’s questions, Luke fails to provide the necessary answers.
Just then, Shoupe along with the deputies arrives at Barracuda Mike’s residence. In response, JJ and Luke swiftly escape aboard JJ’s watercraft. Luke vows to provide answers to JJ about the mystery that has ensued.
John B and Sarah plan to buy a house together once they find the treasure
During the ferry ride toward the mainland, John B and Sarah (Madelyn Cline) discuss their shared future. Following their honeymoon, they decide to jointly purchase a home and leave Poguelandia behind. John B then expresses his desire to start a family, which catches Sarah off guard due to her young age of 19 years old. John B, what on earth are you thinking?
Anyway, Sarah likes the sound of the other stuff, so they’re all good.
However, it seems they might be. Frankly, I’m uncertain! I dislike it when plot developments unfold like this. Let’s hope John B and Sarah survive this journey!
Rafe visits Poguelandia to find Sarah
Kie (Madison Bailey) remains at the store to search for JJ and manage it. Later, Rafe appears, seeking Sarah. He tells Kie that he’s trying to assist but feels disrespected by her tone towards him. He gives his business card to Kie, asking Sarah to contact him instead.
Apart from that, he assures Kie that his actions aren’t meant to harm them. In fact, he claims to be supporting them. However, I remain skeptical about his intentions, but I find myself slightly warming up to Rafe, as I mentioned in our previous conversations a few episodes back.
John B, Pope, Sarah, and Cleo find a cemetery where Blackbeard hid something
After exploring Charleston all day, the Pogues finally find the cemetery where they living and dead meet. They think Blackbeard buried something in a crypt during the Blockade of Charleston.
Indeed, they’ve hit the mark! They discover a hidden entrance beneath the church, which the Pope and Sarah decide to investigate. Meanwhile, John B maintains vigil outside, while Cleo stays on guard within the church.
As an enthusiastic explorer, I stumble upon a hidden passage concealed behind a deceitful brick wall with Pope and Sarah. We venture forth, hopeful of our discovery, but are met instead with foul sewage, vermin, and other unsettling sights. The rats send shivers down Sarah’s spine, causing her to lose her footing and shove me into yet another concealed nook, plunging us even deeper below the church. In our confusion, we unintentionally lock ourselves in a crypt – a chilling catacomb where life and death intertwine, as Pope ominously puts it.
Unfortunately, trouble arises as the antagonists make their appearance! Along comes Lightner accompanied by the captain. They’re in search of the gatekeeper, who appears to be an angel. Upon arrival, they locate this individual promptly. Using the amulet as a means to unlock the tomb, it seems likely that they will encounter Pope and Sarah soon.
Initially, John B deciphers the secret message, but now his companions are independently discovering things. Soon after, Lightner and the ship’s captain appear. Pope and Sarah must extinguish their torches and conceal themselves while Lightner and the captain uncover an ancient parchment. The Pogues can’t make out what it represents; could it be a map?
Lightner and the captain leave quickly and lock the door behind them.
Cleo spots Lightner and the captain departing, and she attempts to harm him. However, he swiftly gains control, preparing to kill her until some people near the cemetery intervene and shout at him. Before he exits, he warns, “We’ll cross paths again for sure.
Instead of returning fire, John B heads towards Lightner on the street, recalling his father’s past actions in pursuit of long-lost treasures. Realizing he doesn’t want to follow in those footsteps, as he isn’t a murderer, he instead discards the gun back into the car.
Sadly, Pope and Sarah are unable to leave, and then it begins to pour down rain. The tomb fills with water, and if they don’t manage to escape soon, they risk drowning.
Luke reveals who JJ’s real parents are
Previously at the Outer Banks, JJ and Luke managed to evade Sheriff Shoupe and his associates. They sought refuge in a lighthouse momentarily, but JJ expresses his intention to depart. He feels he can’t just prioritize Luke’s safety any longer; he also needs to focus on his own life.
Luke halts him and informs him he’ll discuss Albatross, a ship that was named after Larissa Genrette, where she perished.
As a gamer, I’d say it like this: “Hey JJ, man, I’ve got some pretty heavy stuff to share. You see, I’m not your biological father. That’s right, shocker, I know! But here’s the twist: Larissa Genrette is actually your real mom. Yeah, the woman you thought was your mom, wasn’t biologically. Hold on tight now, it gets even crazier. You see, JJ, you are the son of Chandler Grofff and Larissa Genrette, and the grandson of Wes Genrette.
The scene concludes as Chandler Groff and Hollis Robinson gaze upon Goat Island, with Hollis remarking, “It’s going to be magnificent.
WOW! What a bomb to drop at the end of Outer Banks season 4 part 1.
Man, I can’t believe I’ve gotta hold my breath until November 7th for the next five episodes of Outer Banks season 4. Time’s ticking, but hey, it’ll be totally worth the wait!
