Outer Banks season 4 episode 1 review: The Pogues' path to a new treasure hunt feels forced

As a gamer who has been through countless virtual adventures, I can confidently say that Outer Banks season 4 is as thrilling as navigating through a labyrinth of digital obstacles. The first episode was like leveling up in a game, full of familiar characters and new challenges.

At last, Netflix has brought us the first part of Outer Banks season 4! We’ve been eagerly waiting and now, our beloved Pogues are back. The initial episode titled “The Enduro” in Outer Banks season 4 sets the adventure rolling, although it begins rather leisurely. Here’s a rundown of our review, beware of potential spoilers!

Outer Banks season 4 episode 1 review: The Pogues' path to a new treasure hunt feels forced

In the opening episode of the fourth season, we delve into the events that unfolded over the past 18 months since the Pogues discovered El Dorado at the end of season 3 and were subsequently hailed as town heroes. Essentially, we’re asking: what have our main characters – John B, Sarah, Pope, Kie, JJ, and Cleo – been up to? Let me tell you, these folks are anything but idle!

Since they discovered the gold, it’s only natural for them to claim it. In fact, the total amount comes up just under $1.17 million, quite a substantial sum! The Pope advises them to pool all their funds instead of using their individual shares to launch a business – specifically, the Kildare County Surf Shop, as previously hinted in season 4. However, before they can start their new venture, this group of friends must purchase the land beneath JJ’s house from the bank, as that is where they plan to establish their business.

Sure thing, let me rephrase it for a more casual and friendly tone: Hey, so here’s the deal. I absolutely adore JJ – he’s just such a charming guy who’s beloved by many. But, to be completely honest, there have been times when his impulsive decisions have left me scratching my head. And this latest episode was no exception. It all began with that land auction where he kept bidding recklessly, which wasn’t what everyone had agreed upon. Frankly, it got pretty annoying.

They managed to reclaim his house, but the price was significantly steeper than anticipated, which might have been avoidable. After all, it’s JJ’s home, a place filled with memories, good and bad. But, JJ, you really needed to take a moment to think before acting. Please, just consider the consequences. Anyway, life goes on, and we’re working tirelessly to create Poguelandia 2.0, which is truly magnificent!

All the couples are not just doing well but are also adorably affectionate! Hooray! In fact, Kiara confessed her love for JJ. But then, as if destiny is against them, the Pogues face another setback when their fuse box gets damaged due to a storm, preventing them from catching live bait which is crucial for their business. This is a significant part of their operation and the reason behind their loyal clientele. To top it off, they have a massive $13,000 property tax bill coming up, and they’re planning to use their remaining unspent gold to settle this expense.

Indeed, once more, JJ chooses to act independently and wagers the entire $20,000 gold on himself at the Kildare Enduro. I mean, come on! First off, you really shouldn’t have even considered touching it. Secondly, if you were planning to spend some of the money, why would you risk all of it? That appears to be an overly large sum for a local race. Sigh…

In this sequence, I appreciated its dynamic, action-packed feel and the continuous undercurrent of conflict between JJ and John B on one side, and Rafe and Topper on the other. Regrettably, in this instance, the Kooks emerged victorious, leaving the Pogues without their funds. This loss is what ultimately propels them to re-enter the treasure hunting business, as Wes Genrette had offered them Blackbeard’s captain’s log.

Once more, JJ grated on me during the episode as he became angry at John B for not shielding him adequately during the race. The truth is, JJ, it wasn’t John B who made the mistake; it was your decision that failed. Even Kie, your girlfriend, scolded you, saying you should have discussed it with everyone first and that you were making it seem like you had no involvement in it. However, it was indeed all your fault. Absolutely, thank you Kie for pointing that out.

It seems that in the past, JJ has been prone to spending money recklessly instead of saving it wisely. However, this time his actions have had a significant impact on everyone and their well-being. Although his intentions may have been noble, he needs to learn to consider the consequences before making decisions. And honestly, shouldn’t others understand by now that dangling money in front of JJ is not a wise move?

Outer Banks season 4 episode 1 review: The Pogues' path to a new treasure hunt feels forced

In the opening of season 4 for “Outer Banks,” there’s an ominous twist as the Pogues find themselves in Blackstone, home of Wes Genrette and his son-in-law. Despite their previous decision to abandon all treasure hunts, they are drawn back into the game due to JJ’s involvement. It was only a matter of time before this classic “Outer Banks” adventure unfolded again.

All in all, I found myself quite enjoying season 4, episode 1 of Outer Banks. It was filled with delightful moments featuring Pogue, offering a mix of humorous scenes and lively camaraderie among the friends – a skill the writers certainly excel at. However, I feel that this new adventure seems to begin rather gradually. While it’s crucial to understand some of the backstory from the past 18 months and the reasons behind their resumption of treasure hunting, I believe the explanations could have been more concise. Frankly, I think the entire episode could have been compressed significantly for a smoother flow.

Despite being aware that JJ has taken similar actions in the past, I couldn’t help but feel that some of his recent decisions seemed unusual for him. It’s almost as if they amplified a particular trait of his excessively to propel the plot forward. I can’t help but wonder if the writers could have chosen a different approach. At least, it would have been better if JJ hadn’t made such drastic mistakes. To be honest, the series of events that led them to Wes Genrette felt contrived. Nevertheless, I believe this episode serves as a decent introduction to the season. Episode quality rating: C
