Outcry about difficulty of Gigantamax battles in Pokémon GO

As a seasoned Pokémon GO trainer from the heart of the Canadian prairies, I’ve been through my fair share of battles and raids. The arrival of Gigantamax Pokémon has sent ripples of excitement across our community, but also left us scratching our heads in frustration.

There is a lot of anger about how hard it is to take on Gigantamax Pokémon in Pokémon GO.

The introduction of Gigantamax Pokémon in Pokémon GO hasn’t been met with much enthusiasm. Reddit, X, and various social media platforms are filled with complaints and critiques regarding the difficulty of completing Max Battles.

In many instances, Pokémon GO events receive criticism from players residing in rural areas because they struggle to amass enough Pokémon to tackle some of the game’s tougher local bosses. However, the current wave of criticism is not limited to these players alone. Even trainers with large communities have faced challenges when it comes to participating in these battles.

Pokémon GO Trainers say Gigantamax is a “slap in the face for small communities and rural players”

One such criticism, posted on /r/TheSilphRoad has over 1,100 upvotes at the time of writing. Reddit user Hoppip94 outlines that for their community of 5 people these Max Battles are totally impossible. Usually, a group of five would be enough to take on most Raids, if not, additional Trainers can join using Remote Raid Passes.

A minimum of thirty individuals were needed for Gigantamax Max Battles over the weekend, but some users have encountered difficulties even in larger groups.

This is in part down to how few Dynamax Pokémon are avaliable, but also because these Battles were incredibly high difficulty. Coordinating 30 or more people is no small feat, as one Reddit user points out.

Moreover, each Power Spot generated a Gigantamax Pokemon every hour. The constraints on Max Particles imply that Trainers can engage in only a few battles per day without spending extra money. In contrast to Raids, when there is no organized group, these conditions are prevalent. In large cities, people tend to gather where a Raid Egg is about to hatch unknowingly. However, for Gigantamax Pokemon, players today find themselves scattered across the map, battling at random locations. Consequently, players are not naturally concentrating in specific spots.

Big names speak out on Gigantamax difficulty

Currently, there’s a lot of chatter on Reddit expressing dissatisfaction with Pokémon GO. Among these complaints, the backlash against Gigantamax has been particularly widespread, marking some of the strongest criticism the game has faced in recent times. In fact, Community Ambassadors have even postponed planned events because they find it challenging to manage the coordination required.

Notable content creators such as FleeceKing have voiced their opinions with the aim of encouraging Niantic to modify the gameplay to better cater to players seeking to battle Gigantamax Pokémon.

Reports indicate that over the weekend, player lobbies with a maximum of 40 players were unable to defeat Gigantamax Pokémon. It appears that the significant difference in success is due to whether trainers have boosted their Max Moves, such as activating healing and protective moves like Max Guard and Max Spirit.

It’s worth mentioning that increasing your Max Moves requires using Max Particles. Consequently, those who prioritize Max Moves may find themselves doing fewer or no Max Battles on those days. As a result, many trainers tend to focus more on battles rather than investing in moves.

Is there a possibility that Niantic will modify or update Gigantamax Max Battles in the near future? It seems improbable for any changes to occur this coming Sunday, but we can expect the introduction of Gigantamax Gengar next weekend, and Gigantamax Toxtricity during the GO Wild Area event.

One common suggestion is for Pokémon GO to allow Trainers to team up remotely. That could be through an invite system, or through Power Spots pooling lobbies.

This setup enables trainers who desire to manage extensive in-person gatherings to do so effectively, while at the same time offering an opportunity for trainers based in rural areas to engage in these activities as well.
