‘Our connection was on another level’: Jason Donovan reflects on his ‘profound’ romance with Kylie Minogue and admits his wife has found the public obsession with his superstar ex ‘hard’

Jason Donovan has spoken about his deep connection with Kylie Minogue, acknowledging that his wife, Ange, has struggled with the continued public interest in their past relationship.

Jason, the popular actor from the 1980s, recently discussed his connection with Jamie Laing during an appearance on his podcast, Great Company.

‘Were you in love with Kylie?’ Jamie asked him.

‘I think so, yeah,’ Jason replied, almost spitting out his water with laughter.

‘Our connection and what we shared was on another level, mate. On another level.

Kylie began her career playing a bit of a tough, hands-on mechanic on the show Neighbours. Her character was initially quite tomboyish, but she really grew and developed over time.

It was amazing to see, and then Locomotion came along. At first, she mostly chased after me, but eventually, the roles reversed a bit.

Jason and Kylie, both 57, first became known as a couple while playing romantic interests, Scott and Charlene, on the popular 80s Australian TV show Neighbours. They then both went on to have very successful careers as pop singers.

Their onscreen wedding was watched by millions when it was screened in 1988.

Jason and his partner were in a relationship for four years, and he later revealed they first had intimate relations in a Travelodge hotel.

Jason spoke about his wife, Angie, and their three children – Jemma, 24, Zac, 23, and Molly, 13 – and acknowledged that the last 17 years haven’t been easy for her.

‘Imagine all that happens for four years of your life,’ he said.

It feels like your life became a public performance, and your relationship belonged to everyone else. The breakup was especially difficult because of that public scrutiny.

But after that, for the rest of your life, you’ll see it everywhere – on Instagram, or when your partner, like my wife Ange, sees it. Can you picture that?

It’s all anyone talks about – the wedding. But honestly, I’ve been with him for 25 years, and it feels like that’s constantly being overlooked.

‘Everytime I get into a cab now, it’s “How’s Kylie?”‘

Jamie asked Jason how Ange feels about it.

Jason explained that the beginning was really difficult. He hopes it’s okay to say so, but after 25 years, he believes their success speaks for itself.

‘And she is my best friend and the love of my life.’

In 2021, Jason credited Ange with saving his life, stating he wouldn’t be where he is today without her help overcoming cocaine addiction.

He told The Mirror that he likely wouldn’t have survived without Angela. He described her as his savior and believed she was destined to be the great love of his life.

Jason shared that he feels Angela came into his life for a specific purpose. They first met in 1998 when Jason was performing in the UK tour of The Rocky Horror Show.

Jason struggled with cocaine addiction, but when he learned Angela was pregnant with their daughter, Jemma, he committed to getting his life back on track.

In September 2019, the actor shared that he used drugs in the past because he mistakenly thought it would make him appear cool.

Jason said he tried to shake off his good-guy reputation in the 80s and 90s by using cocaine.
