Otani Workshop’s “Tanilla” Sofubi Series Makes a Summer-Ready Return

Otani Workshop has returned with the third edition of their sofubi figure series, collaborating this time with Kaikai Kiki from Tokyo to introduce fresh hues for their popular character, “Tanilla.” Recognized for its adorable and playful appeal, the finned and fanged creature is now available in shades of pink and yellow, continuing the lineage established by earlier versions in green and white.

With summer approaching, our new line features vibrant colors reminiscent of sunny days. It contains a gentle peach shade accented by azure blue eyes, as well as the striking Tanilla yellow that was introduced at the recent Art Basel Hong Kong event.

Initially unveiled as a collection of sculptures in 2022, Tanilla has since emerged as a key element in Otani’s kawaii artistry, manifesting in painted, ceramic, and bronze depictions. A tribute to the artist’s youthful fascination with dinosaurs and natural history, this character’s name is a blend of “Otani” and “Godzilla.” The month of January 2024 was significant for the creature, with a solo exhibition titled Tanilla Tanilla Tanilla at Kaikai Kiki and a collaborative capsule collection with Dior showcasing illustrations.

Starting from June 27, I’ll be able to get my hands on the latest “Tanilla” figurines at THEiCON in Taipei! For all the latest news and details about this release, be sure to check out Kaikai Kiki’s page.
