Oscars will move to YouTube from ABC starting in 2029

Hollywood’s biggest night is moving to YouTube.

Starting in 2029, the Oscars will be streamed live and for free around the world on YouTube. This marks a significant change for the awards show, traditionally known for being broadcast on television, and reflects how people are now watching entertainment.

YouTube will be the new exclusive home for the Academy Awards starting with the 101st ceremony in 2029 and continuing through 2033. This marks the end of a 50-year relationship between the Oscars and ABC, making it the biggest awards show to move away from traditional television and onto a streaming platform. The ceremony, including red carpet events and behind-the-scenes content, will be streamed live globally on YouTube, and in the U.S., it will also be available on YouTube TV.

In a recent discussion for The Hollywood Reporter, actresses Sydney Sweeney, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Elle Fanning, and Tessa Thompson shared their experiences with negative media attention, being typecast, and the challenges of fully becoming their characters.

The Academy and YouTube have partnered to reach a global audience, according to a statement from Academy Chief Executive Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor. They explained that this collaboration supports the Academy’s international goals and will make Oscar content and year-round programming more widely available, calling YouTube the future of the Oscars.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan called the Oscars a vital part of our culture and explained that their collaboration will help the awards show reach viewers globally, while still respecting its history and tradition.

As a movie fan, I’m really excited to hear that YouTube is now the only place to watch all sorts of Academy events! It’s not just the Oscars ceremony itself, but things like the Governors Awards, where they honor lifetime achievements, and even the announcement of who’s nominated. They’re also including the Student Academy Awards, which is awesome – a great way to discover up-and-coming talent. Basically, if it’s related to the Oscars, you’ll find it on YouTube now.
