Oscars Push Back Nominations Announcement Amid California Wildfires

As a devoted cinephile, I was taken aback to learn that the Oscar nominations have been postponed nearly a week from their initial date, due to the ongoing California wildfires. It seems that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to unveil the nominees on January 23rd, as they announced this very day.

Bill Kramer, the CEO, and Janet Yang, the President, of the Academy expressed deep sorrow in a shared statement about the destructive fires. They sympathize with the significant losses felt by numerous members of our community. Historically, our Academy has been a bond that unites the film industry, and they pledge to stay united during these trying times.

Due to ongoing fires in Los Angeles, the film academy has extended the deadline for member nomination votes to Friday, which was previously set for an announcement that very morning.

The group responsible for hosting the Oscars has chosen to scrap their annual nominees gathering, a less-publicized event primarily recognized for the yearly “group photos” it takes. The Scientific and Technical Awards, initially scheduled for February 18, will be moved to a different date.

This year’s 97th Academy Awards are set to take place on March 2nd, at the Dolby Theatre. The event will be televised live on ABC starting at 7 p.m. Eastern Time, and if you prefer streaming, it will also be available live on Hulu.

Oscar nominations were postponed in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On that occasion, the ceremony was postponed for a week due to the catastrophic floods that hit Los Angeles in 1938.

1968 saw a delay of two days due to the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and in 1981, there was a postponement of 24 hours following the shooting of President Ronald Reagan in Washington D.C.

The 1981 decision was made four hours before the broadcast was scheduled to begin.
