The Oscars ceremony on Sunday night (March 15th) included its traditional In Memoriam segment, honoring those in the film industry who recently passed away. While the segment paid special tribute to Rob and Michele Reiner, Catherine O’Hara, and Diane Keaton, many viewers were upset that several other well-known figures were left out, including James Van Der Beek, Brigitte Bardot, and Eric Dane. This omission sparked criticism on social media during the 98th Academy Awards broadcast.
The Oscars’ annual In Memoriam segment was longer this year to honor the many significant figures the film industry lost over the past year. Producer Katy Mullan explained to The Hollywood Reporter that it had been a particularly difficult year for the industry, with the passing of numerous icons and leaders. Expanding the tribute felt necessary to properly acknowledge those lost.
