At last, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to include a new award category in their Oscars event. From now on, stunt performers will receive the recognition they deserve.
Every year, this grand event honors exceptional film accomplishments across various domains, including acting, direction, and intricate behind-the-scenes skills like cinematography and set design.
Although stunt performers have always played crucial roles in movie production, they’ve never received recognition at the most prestigious awards event. However, The Academy has announced plans to establish an Achievement in Stunt Design category.
The transformation won’t happen right away, as the new category isn’t scheduled to debut until the 100th Academy Awards, which is set for March 2028. This event recognizes films from the preceding year, so the first movies eligible for this award will be those released in 2027.
From the onset of movie-making, stunt design has been an essential component in the film industry, noted Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang. We are delighted to acknowledge the groundbreaking work of these artistic technicians, and we extend our congratulations for their perseverance and dedication that led them to this remarkable milestone.

Although they’ve made an announcement, the Academy has yet to decide whether the award will be presented during the live broadcast of the event itself. They’ve stated that the details regarding the presentation of this particular award will be decided by the Academy’s Board of Governors and executive team at a later time.
For the very first time since the honor for Casting Excellence was established last year, a fresh category – Recognition for Stunt Design – will be presented by the Academy. This award is set to make its debut during the 98th Academy Awards taking place next year, marking a gap of nearly two decades since the introduction of the Best Animated Feature category in 2002.
Various industry professionals have embraced the latest news, with director David Leitch (formerly a stunt coordinator) expressing approval after consulting with the Academy and issuing a statement in response.

Stunts play a crucial role in all film genres, with their origins deeply ingrained in our industry’s past. Pioneers like Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Charlie Chaplin set the stage for groundbreaking stunt work in the early days, while today’s stunt designers, coordinators, performers, and choreographers continue to impress with their artistic contributions.
After a lengthy journey, Chris O’Hara and I have diligently labored for many years to make this special moment happen. We owe a debt of gratitude to the unsung heroes – the stunt professionals – who have battled relentlessly for recognition throughout the decades. We are deeply appreciative. A big thank you goes out to the Academy.
