Oscars 2025: Viewers Rage as Hulu’s Livestream Crashes During Epic Opening!

During Hulu’s first live broadcast of the prestigious Oscars, many viewers expressed strong frustration due to technical difficulties that occurred at the beginning of the event.

2025 was the groundbreaking year when I had the privilege of witnessing the Academy Awards unfold live, not just on traditional television (ABC), but also through streaming platforms such as Hulu.

However, people who opted to watch the Oscars on Hulu ended up feeling let down due to a sudden technical problem that prevented them from seeing the spectacular opening performance by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo from Wicked.

During the three-hour program led by Conan O’Brien, numerous individuals often reported experiencing issues like pixelation, freezing, and unexpected crashes.

Hulu users swiftly took to social platforms to vent their frustration about the broken streaming service, urging Hulu to rectify the problems they were encountering.

One user of X audaciously asserted that Hulu struggles with live events, in contrast to their rival Netflix, who successfully streamed the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards.

A viewer expressed their frustration online by saying, “I understand it’s the Oscars on Hulu tonight, but since you’re a streaming service, the frequent pixelation, freezing, and crashes are really annoying.

As a devoted follower, I found the technical difficulties so bothersome that numerous individuals from X decided to terminate their Hulu subscriptions and opt for YouTube TV instead.

Hulu addressed the massive criticism about X by promising their subscribers they are diligently looking into the problems causing service disruptions.

They recommended trying to refresh or update the Hulu application as a potential solution for any lingering streaming problems.

2024’s Academy Awards are celebrating the year’s finest films by awarding them. This glamorous event will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

61-year-old Conan jokingly admitted he agreed to be the Oscars host just so he could receive an invitation.

In a jovial manner, Conan, 61, stated he accepted the role as Oscars host only for the chance to get an invite.

2021’s awards event features a particularly unpredictable landscape across several major categories such as Best Picture and the majority of acting awards.

This year, Emilia Pérez is at the forefront of nominations with a total of 13, among which are categories such as Best Picture, Best Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, Best Director for Jacques Audiard, Adapted Screenplay, and Original Song.

In this storyline, Gascón takes on the role of the main character, a previous Mexican drug lord who transitions into a woman and orchestrates her own demise to reemerge as a positive influence. Meanwhile, Saldaña portrays a lawyer with questionable morals, assisting in establishing the new identity for this transformed figure.

In the end, the film “Brutalist” secured the runner-up position with a total of 10 nominations across various categories. Among these were nods for Best Picture, Best Director (recognizing Brady Corbet’s work), Best Actor (for Adrien Brody), Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce received recognition), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones was nominated), and Original Screenplay.

In this new portrayal, Brody plays a Hungarian architect named László Tóth, who is Jewish and manages to emigrate to America following the Holocaust. The sweeping historical drama chronicles his struggle to bring his artistic aspirations to life amidst clashes with the selfish whims of his affluent patron (Pearce).

In the awards ceremony, Wicked earned a total of 10 nominations, among them were categories such as Best Picture, Best Actress (for Cynthia Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress (for Ariana Grande).

As a dedicated admirer, I’m excited to share that the highly anticipated musical is a fresh take on merely the initial act of a musical with a similar title. This prequel to The Wizard of Oz features Erivo brilliantly portraying Elphaba, who later becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and Grande enchantingly playing Galinda Upland, destined to become Glinda the Good.

Among the other contenders vying for the top spot, you’ll find my personal favorites such as “Anora,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” “I’m Still Here,” and the powerful “The Nickel Boys” and “The Substance.” Each of these masterpieces has left a lasting impression on me.

At the Screen Actors Guild Awards, held a week prior to the Oscars, there was a significant twist in the closely followed competition for the Best Actor in a Leading Role. This unexpected change came when Timothée Chalamet triumphed with his performance in the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown.

Before that victory, Brody appeared as the likely choice due to his success in securing best actor accolades at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes, and the Critics Choice Movie Awards.

Ralph Fiennes persistently remains a strong contender for his part as a British Cardinal who is determined to prevent a secretive papal election from turning chaotic with competition and underhanded schemes.

The highly praised movie has garnered several acting victories for Fiennes at smaller events and gatherings, along with numerous ensemble awards that Fiennes received more than once.

Among the top three contenders, there’s competition not only among themselves but also from Colman Domingo for his role in Sing Sing and Sebastian Stan for his portrayal of a young Donald Trump on The Apprentice.

As a fervent admirer, I must say, the Best Actress category is shrouded in uncertainty – no single contender stands out as an undisputed leader. However, Demi Moore has left me utterly spellbound with her captivating comeback role in the ironic, chilling body-horror film, The Substance. This performance has earned her top actress accolades from esteemed bodies such as the Critics Choice Awards and Golden Globes, along with numerous critics’ organizations. Simply put, Moore’s portrayal in this movie is nothing short of extraordinary!

However, winning an award a week prior to the Oscars at the Screen Actors Guild Awards implies that she could potentially win the Oscar this year, since it’s her first nomination.

Actress Mikey Madison, known for her role as an impulsive adult dancer who unexpectedly wed the offspring of a Russian tycoon, received widespread praise and recognition from various critics’ associations at the start of the series.

After winning the BAFTA for Best Lead Actress, her odds improved considerably. This success was further boosted when she earned another win at the Independent Spirit Awards in the category of gender-neutral lead performance.

Previously admired contender Emilia Pérez, known as Karla Sofía Gascón, found herself under intense scrutiny when her past tweets containing racial slurs and Islamophobic remarks surfaced in English translations. These controversial posts, some quite fresh, had previously gone unnoticed until they were reported on.

After her controversial social media posts were exposed, Gascón has chosen not to participate in award ceremonies. Despite several insincere apologies, it is said that Netflix has ceased covering her travel and accommodation expenses for these events. However, according to a source who spoke with People, she intends to attend the Oscars regardless.

Prior to the debate, her nomination had been viewed as groundbreaking, since she became the first openly transgender woman to be nominated for Best Actress.

Among the other contenders are Cynthia Erivo, renowned for her role in Wicked but yet to receive any significant awards, and Fernanda Torres, starring in the historical drama “I’m Still Here.” However, Torres found herself embroiled in a scandal when footage of her portraying a character in blackface from a 17-year-old Brazilian TV series resurfaced in January.

Among those nominated in the category of Best Supporting Actress are Monica Barbaro for her role in A Complete Unknown, Ariana Grande for Wicked, Felicity Jones for The Brutalist, Isabella Rossellini for Conclave, and Zoe Saldaña for Emilia Pérez.

It seems that Saldaña is currently the front-runner following a series of victories at the Golden Globes, BAFTA Awards, SAG Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.

In my professional opinion, certain accolades bestowed earlier in her career may have disadvantaged Emilia Pérez due to the timing of their voting periods. Unfortunately, this could have occurred when the controversy surrounding Gascón was yet to unfold, potentially swaying voters away from supporting her entirely.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can confidently say that the guessing game for the Best Supporting Actor award feels almost too easy this year! The remarkable performances by Kieran Culkin in A Real Pain have left an indelible impression, turning him into the clear frontrunner. I can hardly wait to see if he’ll take home the well-deserved prize!

Besides Yura Borisov (for Anora), Edward Norton (A Complete Unknown), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice) are also in the running for nominations.

Initially, Emilia Pérez appeared to be the frontrunner among the nominated photos. However, Gascon’s controversial posts could potentially jeopardize her chances of winning.

Anora, the film that won the Palme d’Or, gained momentum towards the end with victories for Best Picture at both the Directors Guild of America Awards and the Producers Guild of America Awards. These awards are often seen as strong indicators by Oscar forecasters, and its win at the Independent Spirit Awards added to its growing momentum.

It appears that the top contender for the “Best Director” award could potentially include three candidates: Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), and Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez).

2021’s original song category includes two tunes by Emilia Pérez, namely El Mal and Mi Camino, the new Elton John song titled Never Too Late from the documentary of the same name about him, a track called Like a Bird by Sing Sing, and the most recent composition by Diane Warren, The Journey.

The Academy Awards ceremony starts at 7 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) or 4 p.m. Pacific Time (PT). You can catch it live on ABC, and for the first time ever, on the streaming platform, Hulu.

Those who subscribe to premium services such as Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV, and FuboTV can additionally watch the event live.
