Oscars 2025: Top British Stars Dominate Nominations, But One Favorite Misses Out
On Thursday, prior to the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony, Cynthia Erivo, Felicity Jones, and Ralph Fiennes were the front-runners among British and Irish stars who received an Oscar nomination. However, a beloved figure in the fan community was overlooked for this prestigious honor.
38-year-old actress from Wicked is aiming to win the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, due to her outstanding performance as Elphaba, the wicked witch of the west.
The blockbuster musical on Broadway earned a grand total of 10 nominations, signifying a remarkable achievement for its screen-to-stage transition.
Instead, Cynthia competes against Demi Moore, Mikey Madison, Karla Sofia Gascón, and Fernanda Torres in a bid to win the trophy.
Simultaneously, fellow British actress Felicity Jones has earned a nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, which she received for her portrayal of Erzsébet Tóth in the historical drama titled The Brutalist.
Drawing inspiration from Jean-Louis Cohen’s book “Architecture in Uniform,” the movie features Adrien Brody portraying a Hungarian architect, while Felicity takes on the role of his wife in the storyline.

Felicity finds herself competing with Ariana Grande, a fellow actress from the show “Wicked,” in the category of best performance, for which she received an Oscar nomination as Glinda The Good Witch.
Additionally, Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), and Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) are similarly aiming for a significant win in the same category.
On Thursday afternoon, Ralph Fiennes was recognized with a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. This was following his remarkable transformation into Cardinal Lomeli for the movie Conclave.
In addition, Adrien Brody for The Brutalist, Timothée Chalamet for A Complete Unknown, Colman Domingo for Sing Sing, and Sebastian Stan for The Apprentice are also up for consideration in this category.
Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that Daniel Craig, a prominent British actor, was absent from the category. He wasn’t recognized with a nomination for his role in “Queer.

The duration for voting, starting from Wednesday, has now been prolonged until Tuesday, January 14. Originally, it was scheduled to conclude on Sunday, January 12.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a letter from the Academy expresses heartfelt sympathy towards all those affected by the catastrophic wildfires in Southern California.
