Oscar-Winning War Movie Featuring Horror Icon Tony Todd Hits Prime Video June 1
Oliver Stone’s Platoon is about to have a brand-new home.
Starting June 1st, Oliver Stone’s Vietnam War trilogy’s first installment, “Platoon,” will find its new streaming home on Amazon Prime Video. This groundbreaking film, which showcased several prominent Hollywood stars and launched the career of horror legend Tony Todd in one of his earliest roles, is now ready for you to stream.
The movie titled “Platoon” debuted in cinemas on December 19, 1986, receiving widespread praise from critics. Charlie Sheen played Chris Taylor, a U.S. Army volunteer, who found himself in the thick of South Vietnam’s conflict near the Cambodian border in 1967. The film offered an unflinching portrayal of war, with much of it focused on the cynical and cruel Staff Sgt. Barnes, played by Tom Berenger. Notable performances from esteemed actors such as Willem Dafoe, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Depp, Keith David, and the late and highly respected Tony Todd were also part of the impressive ensemble cast.
Platoon Won Best Picture, Best Director, and Other Oscars
After its release, the movie titled “Platoon” earned a significant number of major industry award nominations, with the majority being wins. Among these were four out of its eight Academy Award nominations, which it successfully claimed as Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound. To add to this success, it grossed more than $138 million at the box office, despite having a production budget of just $6 million.
Following the release of “Platoon”, Oliver Stone delved deeper into the Vietnam War by producing three subsequent films. The first, titled “Born on the Fourth of July”, came out in 1989 and was inspired by the autobiography penned by former U.S Marine Corps sergeant and anti-war activist Ron Kovic. In 1993, Stone concluded his Vietnam War Trilogy with “Heaven & Earth”. This film starred Tommy Lee Jones, Haing S. Ngor, Joan Chen, and Hiep Thi Le, and was based on the books “When Heaven and Earth Changed Places” and “Child of War, Woman of Peace” written by Le Ly Hayslip. While “Born on the Fourth of July” was another hit for Stone, it is often considered the least impressive of his trilogy.
Starting from June 1st, you can stream the movie “Platoon” on Amazon Prime Video. On the other hand, the last film of Tony Todd, titled “Final Destination: Revelations,” is now showing in cinemas.
