A critically acclaimed sci-fi film is now available to stream. Released in 2022, the movie quickly became known as one of the year’s best, uniquely combining the action of classic martial arts films with a mind-bending, dimension-hopping sci-fi story. It impressed both viewers and the Academy Awards.
Now streaming on HBO Max, Everything Everywhere All at Once is a mind-bending sci-fi film from directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan (known as The Daniels) and A24, the studio behind many unique and creative movies. The film, which captivated audiences in 2022, stars Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, James Hong, and rising star Stephanie Hsu, with a standout performance from Ke Huy Quan. New viewers are continuing to discover this critically acclaimed movie, and it’s considered one of the best sci-fi films of the last decade.
Prior to Marty Supreme, Everything Everywhere All at Once was A24’s biggest box office hit. The film stars Michelle Yeoh as Evelyn Quan Wang, a laundromat owner facing both financial hardship and a strained relationship with her daughter. She unexpectedly finds herself on a quest to save the universe from a powerful villain named Jobu Tupaki. However, beneath the exciting action, the movie is a deeply moving story about family, understanding different generations, and celebrating what makes each person special.
‘EEAAO’s Action Was Designed by YouTubers
Action movies are famously costly to produce. Beyond hiring skilled stunt people and coordinators, there’s a lot of specialized equipment, extensive rehearsal time, and often, elaborate special effects. Plus, shooting action sequences requires many takes to get everything just right. And, of course, everyone on set needs to be fed! However, when making their movie, The Daniels found a clever solution: they hired two popular YouTubers to choreograph the fight scenes. The results were fantastic.
MartialClub is a popular YouTube channel known for recreating iconic fight scenes and creating their own original choreography, earning them millions of views. They not only perform the stunts but also choreograph the fights themselves, including the well-known “butt plug fight scene.” We previously mentioned that the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once (EEAAO) feels like a truly original science fiction film.

A24
Winning several Oscars requires more than just impressive action. The heart of the film Everything Everywhere All at Once is the complex bond between a mother and daughter. They struggle with typical generational gaps, and both contribute to the distance between them – it actually takes exploring different universes for them to begin to understand each other.
