On Monday, Awdah Hathaleen, a prominent figure within the Palestinian community and a consultant for the Academy Award-winning documentary “No Other Land,” tragically passed away following an alleged shooting by an Israeli settler in the disputed region of the West Bank.
On Monday, Yuval Abraham, the filmmaker and focus of “No Other Land,” announced the tragic death of his colleague Hathaleen, stating on X (previously Twitter), “[Hathaleen] has just passed away. Murdered.” Two hours earlier, Abraham had posted a video of the incident that led to Hathaleen’s demise. In the footage, an individual wearing a dark shirt is seen pushing people in a crowd and drawing his gun before firing at unseen individuals off-camera.
In Abraham’s video description, he states that Yinon Levi is the individual who fatally shot Hathaleen in the lungs. It was reported that Levi is one of the 13 extreme Israeli settlers, previously subjected to international sanctions due to accusations of attacking and harassing Palestinians in the West Bank. However, these sanctions were removed by President Trump in January.
“This is him in the video firing like crazy,” Abraham tweeted.
The event took place in Umm al-Khair village, situated within Masafer Yatta area, which was highlighted in “No Other Land.” Unfortunately, Hathaleen was critically injured and subsequently passed away at an Israeli hospital. This information was verified by his family to the New York Times. He was 31 years old.
Famine’s toll on the children of Gaza: The world shouldn’t look away
The following pictures form a collection that underscores the hardships faced by children in Gaza, as the situation there becomes increasingly dire with citizens struggling to find food.
Based on various sources, Israeli authorities stated they arrived at the scene, apprehending and taking into custody an Israeli national. The individual was not named, who was brought in for interrogation, as reported by CNN. Furthermore, Israeli authorities also detained five Palestinians and two foreign tourists, allegedly connected to Monday’s events, according to the BBC. It was stated that terrorists allegedly threw rocks towards a nearby Israeli settlement of Carmel, as per CNN’s report.
The IDF did not immediately respond to The Times’ request for confirmation on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, Basel Adra, the filmmaker behind “No Other Land” and a Palestinian journalist, shared a video on Twitter from a different perspective. In this video, Levi is depicted with a pistol in his right hand, striking someone in front of him. The footage also shows Levi raising his right arm to shoot off-screen. Adra asserts that it was Levi who fired the bullet that ended Hathaleen’s life. Furthermore, he notes that an apartheid court decided to release Levi on house arrest.
On Monday, Adra expressed shock on Twitter about the death of her friend Adwah: “My dearest friend Adwah was tragically killed last night. He was positioned in front of the community center in his village when a settler shot a bullet that struck his chest, ending his life. This is how Israel gradually eliminates us – one life lost at a time.

Film director Hamdan Ballal from Palestine, known for his movie ‘No Other Land’, was released just under 24 hours after Israeli security personnel apprehended him in the wake of an assault carried out by settlers.
On Instagram, the Center for Jewish Nonviolence referred to Hathaleel as a prominent figure in the Masafer Yatta community: “an activist, artist, and educator.” The activist organization highlighted that last month, Hathaleel and another Palestinian man were prevented from entering, detained overnight, and eventually deported back to the West Bank upon their arrival at San Francisco International Airport.
Many in our community were fortunate to know Awdah, learn from him, and cherish his friendship. Our statement concludes with a call to action. Let us honor Awdah’s memory by making it a catalyst for change. May we witness justice for Awdah, as well as for all Palestinians, in our own lifetimes.
In March of this year, a member of the award-winning “No Other Land” film crew, Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Ballal, was violently assaulted by Israeli settlers in the village of Susiya, located in the Masafer Yatta region. Reports indicate that the assault occurred during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, when residents were breaking their fast. According to the Associated Press, the attackers wore masks, carried weapons, and some donned military uniforms. After the incident, Israeli security forces apprehended Ballal on allegations that he had thrown stones at the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and police.

Over the past two years, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification has indicated that Gaza has been dangerously close to experiencing a famine. However, more recent events have significantly exacerbated the predicament, with tighter restrictions on movement enforced by Israel being among the key factors contributing to this deterioration.
Yesterday, I was freed with bruises marring my face and stains of blood on my attire. The sound of soldiers’ laughter still echoes in my ears. My wife mentioned that the global focus on “No Other Land” winning an Oscar seemed to embolden settlers, making them more aggressive towards us. This powerful documentary, mired in controversy this year in Miami Beach, chronicles the destruction of Palestinian villages in Masafer Yatta and the displacement of their communities, paving the way for Israeli military training grounds.
For approximately two years now, Israel has been engaged in conflict with Hamas, resulting in over 60,000 Palestinian fatalities according to the Gaza Health Ministry’s latest report. In the last day alone, at least 77 lives were lost, many of them while trying to obtain food.
