Oscar winner joins Spider-Man star in “mysterious” mermaid thriller

Award-winning actresses Mika Madison (Oscar recipient) and Kristen Dunst have agreed to star in the film titled “Reptilia“, characterized as a captivating and enigmatic thriller centering on mermaids.

After receiving her Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in “Anora”, Madison will now be working alongside “Spider-Man” and “Civil War” star Kirsten Dunst. This collaboration is for a distinct new movie directed by Alejandro Landes Echavarría, who previously gained recognition with the 2019 war drama “Monos”.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie titled ‘Reptilia’ will unfold a tale about a dental hygienist getting enticed by an enigmatic mermaid in the secretive and swampy realm of Florida’s unique wildlife trading industry.

The screenplay for “Reptilia” was collaboratively written by Landes Echavarría and Duke Merriman, but information about it is limited at this time. It’s been mentioned that filming will commence prior to its presentation at the Cannes Film Market for potential sales.

The project represents a new initiative for Madison following her standout performance in Sean Baker’s “Anora,” which triumphed at the 97th Academy Awards, securing five awards, among them Best Picture, Best Director, and the Best Actress honor for Madison herself.

This comedy-drama focuses on the story of Madison’s character, Ani, a New York stripper who unexpectedly plunges into a whirlwind romance with Vanya, the rich son of a Russian oligarch, and quickly gets married to him. (Mark Eydelshteyn plays the role of Vanya.)

Previously, Madison, who later received the BAFTA Award for Best Actress for her portrayal, had discussed the emotionally charged final scene where her character weeps alongside Igor (Yuri Borisov), after an intense few days together.

“So much has happened to Ani over the course of such a short period of time,” she said.

Over time, a multitude of feelings – sorrow, hurt, fury, and irritation – have piled up within her, yet she’s been unable or unwilling to let go. These emotions remain bottled up inside.

In simpler terms, the movie primarily explores unanticipated bonds, and she manages to establish a genuine connection and communicate emotionally with Igor, all without using words. I was attempting to understand and empathize with the character’s thoughts and feelings.
