Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres is “very sorry” for controversial blackface sketch
Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres has apologised after a sketch of her in blackface has resurfaced.
The renowned Brazilian actress has just been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category for her performance in “I’m Still Here“. This nomination follows her winning of a Golden Globe award for the very same role.
Nevertheless, she found herself in the limelight due to an old TV sketch resurfacing online, depicting her in blackface. On this particular program, she assumed various roles, one of which was portraying a Black housekeeper. This character eventually gained strength and empowerment from the homeowner.
Torres expressed her deep regret, stating that it was crucial for her to speak up promptly to minimize additional distress and uncertainty.
Back then, even though Black activists and groups were working tirelessly, the understanding of the racist past and significance of blackface was still not widely recognized by the general public in Brazil – that’s what I’ve learned.
Through enhanced cultural sensitivity and significant, albeit incomplete, advancements in this century, it’s unmistakable now both here in our nation and globally that blackface is always unacceptable.
Torres emphasized that this discussion is crucial for ensuring that prejudiced behaviors don’t become accepted as standard, both in the past and present.
In her capacity as an artist and world resident, she expressed from her sincere feelings, always vigilant and dedicated to fostering essential transformations for a world that is devoid of discrimination based on equality and race.
I’m ecstatic to announce that I’ve followed in the footsteps of my legendary mom, Fernanda Montenegro, by becoming the second Brazilian actress ever to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar – a milestone achieved just recently! What an honor to carry on this tradition!
2022’s nominations are spearheaded by musician Emilia Pérez, who has earned a total of 13 nominations. Notably, actress Karla Sofía Gascón made history as the first openly transgender individual to receive an acting Oscar nomination this year.
In the race for nominations, “Wicked” and “The Brutalist” were close contenders, both receiving 10 nominations, while “Conclave” and “A Complete Unknown” followed closely behind with a total of 8 nominations each.
