Oscar nominations delayed due to LA wildfires

This year’s Oscars nominations have been postponed due to wildfires across Los Angeles.

The organization known as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed a change in schedule: instead of announcing nominations on January 17 (a Friday), they will do so on January 19 (a Sunday). Additionally, they’ve decided to prolong the voting period for the Oscars.

Various screenings, competitions, and the Academy Museum have all experienced disruptions due to wildfires that scorched over 27,000 acres in Los Angeles, resulting in at least five fatalities.

Over 150,000 individuals have been instructed to leave their homes following the initial blaze that ignited in the Palisades at approximately 10:30 am on Tuesday, the 7th of January.

In an email to our valued Academy members, which was obtained by Deadline, our CEO Bill Kramer expressed his heartfelt sympathies: “Dear Academy members, we are deeply saddened to extend our sincere condolences to those affected by the destructive wildfires sweeping across Southern California.

Hey fellow gamers in LA, I’ve got some news that might be important for you, given the current fire situation. As many of us are based there, we’re thinking of you and hoping everyone is safe.

First off, regarding the Oscars, there’s an extension to the voting window for nominations. This gives you a bit more time to cast your votes if needed.

Secondly, I wanted to share updates on the Oscars Shortlist Screenings, Bake-Offs, and the Academy Museum. There are some changes to these events due to the situation, so keep an eye out for official communications about how they might affect you.

The nomination process for the 97th Academy Awards began today at 9 am Pacific Time. To provide additional time for our members, we have decided to extend the voting period by two days. Consequently, voting will end on Tuesday, January 14, at 5 pm Pacific Time.

The event for screening the International Feature Film Shortlist, set for tonight in Los Angeles, is being moved to later this week. Screenings in New York and London will proceed as planned. A reminder that all 15 shortlisted films in the International Feature Film category can be accessed on the Academy Screening Room (ASR).

I’m sorry to inform you, but the live Los Angeles Sound Branch Bake-Off set for January 11 has been called off. The dates for the Bay Area, London, and New York Sound Bake-Offs remain as planned. Remember, the Sound Bake-Off will be accessible to all members on the ASR platform.

Kramer announced that several events have been called off, such as the baking competitions for makeup artists and hairstylists in Los Angeles and New York, as well as the visual effects bake-offs in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. However, he extended an invitation to branch members for a virtual meeting on Saturday, January 11.
