Oh my gosh, I almost didn’t recognize him! It was amazing seeing him out and about in Manhattan, but wow, it’s been 41 years since he played that iconic role that everyone remembers him for. Seriously, I was floored! It’s just… incredible to see him after all this time.
The 71-year-old actor famously portrayed a renowned composer in the celebrated 1984 film, earning a Golden Globe Award the following year.
He is also the proud recipient of an Emmy Award and a Tony Award.
The actor stepped back from performing in the mid-1990s and turned his attention to directing and writing for the stage, which had become his new passion.
He returned to acting in 2023 by reprising one of his legendary roles.
So can you guess who he is?

That’s Tom Hulce! He’s famous for his role as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the 1984 movie, *Amadeus*.
His performance in the film, featuring Simon Callow, F. Murray Abraham, and Elizabeth Berridge, earned him nominations for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe.
He’s also remembered for his part in the 1986 film *Echo Park*, where he acted with Susan Dey.
Hulce also appeared in several films, including *Those Lips, Those Eyes* (1980), *National Lampoon’s Animal House* (1978), and *Parenthood* (1989), where she starred alongside Steve Martin.
He won an Emmy Award for his role as Peter Patrone in 1995’s The Heidi Chronicles.
Hulce voiced Quasimodo in Disney’s animated film The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1996.
In addition to his film success, the actor won a Tony Award in 2007 for producing the musical *Spring Awakening*. He’s also been nominated for Tonys several times for his acting in plays like *A Few Good Men* and *Hamlet*.
In 2008 Hulce publicly came out as gay in an interview with Seattle Gay News.

He also quickly denied a false online story claiming he had gotten married and had a baby girl.
He stated that the claim about him having a wife and child is untrue. He explained that a lot of false information circulates online.
Wikipedia allows anyone to contribute, so information there isn’t always accurate. I’m okay with being included in lists identifying openly gay actors, even though I haven’t acted for about ten years.
In 2018, he revealed he’d stopped acting, telling Page Six that he’d lost the desire to continue. He said he enjoyed his time as an actor but was done with it, having not appeared in anything for 15 years. He keeps his awards packed away in boxes.
‘Directing’s what I did for 20 years. And actors can’t have vision. Now vision’s exciting.
I oversee every aspect of a project, from initial selection to bringing it to life. This includes choosing the creative team – the director, writer, actors, and designers – securing funding, and constantly overcoming challenges that require ingenuity, not just money.
