As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but express my thoughts about “The Brutalist,” the captivating film that’s garnering attention with its stellar cast including Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones. However, it seems this masterpiece has been met with criticism due to its innovative incorporation of artificial intelligence.
This captivating historical drama chronicles the journey of architect László Tóth and his wife Erzsébet (Jones), as they leave their homeland to settle in America, chasing the elusive American Dream. Their lives undergo significant transformations after encountering a wealthy patron (Guy Pearce).
Although it’s been praised widely, the movie has faced fresh scrutiny due to the revelation by editor Dávid Jancsó in an interview with Red Shark News that artificial intelligence was employed to adjust the Hungarian accents of Brody and Jones.

The news has sparked widespread criticism online, as viewers have voiced their opinions on various social media platforms. One user on Twitter commented, “Even though AI was employed to refine the actors’ accents and design the architecture, it seems ironic for a film centered around an architect.
I feel deeply disappointed when I watch a stunning film, only to discover later that it incorporated AI for cost-cutting purposes instead of authenticity. It seems like this will happen more often in the future, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between real human work and AI. I really dislike this trend.
A different user suggested this: “Though everyone can use the same AI tools as The Brutalist does, we’re not witnessing any comparable American epics of similar quality and vision. Why is that? It seems like arguing about autofocus versus manual focus – it’s ultimately about who’s pulling the strings.
A different way of expressing the same thought could be: “To me, using AI to modify Adrian Brody’s accent for ‘The Brutalist AI’ project seems like a dangerous path towards award consideration. In my opinion, modifying a performance with AI in such a significant way should lead to disqualification from awards ceremonies.

In response to the criticism, director Brady Corbet explained to The Hollywood Reporter: “Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones developed their own unique performances. For many months, they collaborated extensively with dialect coach Tanera Marshall to master their accents.
The unique Respeecher technology was applied exclusively during the editing of Hungarian dialogues, with a focus on enhancing specific vowel sounds and characters for precision. However, no alterations were made to the original English dialogue.
This task was carried out manually, with our audio crew along with Respeecher, during the post-production phase. Our goal was to maintain the originality of Adrien and Felicity’s performances when translated into another language, ensuring that it didn’t distort or change their performances in any way, and always keeping a high regard for the artistry involved.
The Brutalist is in UK cinemas on January 24.
