Original ‘Social Network’ Star Shares Definite Reason Why He Isn’t Coming Back for the Sequel

Jesse Eisenberg is known for playing characters who aren’t always good people. Many remember him as Lex Luthor in the DC movies, but he also famously played Mark Zuckerberg in the hit film The Social Network, earning an Oscar nomination for his performance. However, for a new project called The Social Reckoning, the role of Zuckerberg has been recast with Jeremy Strong from Succession. Eisenberg has recently shared some insights into why that decision was made.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Jesse Eisenberg recently appeared on The Today Show with Craig Melvin to discuss his upcoming film, Now You See Me 3, which comes out November 14th. In a lighthearted exchange, Eisenberg was asked about a potential sequel to The Social Network. Instead of giving a direct answer, he playfully suggested he was involved in the recent robbery at the Louvre Museum, saying, “You know, I was in Paris. And I had some tools, and I figured there was a way to make a little more of a statement at the Louvre.”

Melvin confronted him, saying, “I figured out what you were up to.” Eisenberg remained guarded, responding, “Yes, I see your game. We’re both being strategic.” He eventually explained why he wouldn’t be in the next movie, which Aaron Sorkin is writing and will also direct, taking over from David Fincher.

It’s not about the movie being good, honestly. But when you portray a character, you eventually start to feel like you’ve changed as a person.

It’s a fantastic film! I know Aaron Sorkin, the writer and director, and even though I’m not in the movie, that has no bearing on how great it’s going to be.

‘The Social Reckoning’ Will Feature an Entirely New Version of Mark Zuckerberg

When an actor takes on a role previously played by someone else – especially if they don’t look alike – you naturally expect a different interpretation, even if they’re portraying the same person. Jesse Eisenberg showed us the frantic energy of Mark Zuckerberg during Facebook’s rise, while Jeremy Strong is tackling the challenge of playing a businessman under intense public pressure who also became incredibly wealthy. These are two very distinct approaches, and they could easily justify seeing the character reimagined with a new actor.

Mark Strong has previously stated that Jesse Eisenberg’s performance as Zuckerberg in The Social Network won’t influence his own approach to the character. He described the script for the sequel, written by Aaron Sorkin, as exceptional, relevant to current events, and tackling sensitive issues. Strong also emphasized that the character is compelling and nuanced, and that he’s committed to portraying him with thoughtfulness, understanding, and impartiality.
