Director Gore Verbinski has likely finished with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. In an interview with ScreenRant, he indicated that while he enjoyed making the first three movies, he considers that part of his career over, disappointing fans who hoped he’d return to direct another installment.

Verbinski shared that, although he enjoyed working on the Pirates of the Caribbean films, he felt he’d taken the series as far as he could. He explained that repeating the same kind of movie, or any project, eventually becomes less fulfilling. He added that returning to the franchise wouldn’t feel as exciting as it once did, making the idea less attractive.

Despite not planning to return himself, the director emphasized that there are still plenty of stories to explore within the franchise. In fact, he feels the vastness of the universe offers limitless potential for future installments. He also expressed his support and best wishes to anyone new taking on the project.

I wish everyone well, but I’m currently at a standstill. I gave it my best shot three times, and it was a valuable learning experience each time. It feels like we’re reaching a breaking point. Once something becomes familiar, it loses its excitement and challenge. There are simply too many stories to tell and not enough time to tell them all.

Gore Verbinski directed the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies – The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Dead Man’s Chest (2006), and At World’s End (2007) – and was instrumental in making the series a global success. He’s known for creating well-developed characters and for his pioneering use of practical and visual effects, which were remarkably advanced for their time.

Disney is working on a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer says they’re almost finished with the script. However, the studio is still looking at a few different script options, so plans could change. Many fans are wondering if Johnny Depp will return as Jack Sparrow, but there’s been no official announcement about that yet.
