Original Avenger making a Marvel comeback for potential goodbye project
As a seasoned Marvel fan with over two decades of comic book adventures under my belt, I can confidently say that the Avengers have been the cornerstone of my cinematic universe. The way they brought together Earth’s Mightiest Heroes back in 2012 was nothing short of magical. Fast forward to Avengers: Endgame, and I still find myself awestruck by that epic battle.
Since the debut of The Avengers as a team in 2012, they have served as the bond that has strengthened the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Before this, the franchise was already thriving with individual films featuring Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, and Thor performing strongly at the box office. However, it wasn’t until The Avengers introduced those characters (alongside Hawkeye and Black Widow) that the MCU notched up its first of numerous billion-dollar hits.
In the fourth installment of the Avengers series, Avengers: Endgame, marked the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, wrapping up the Thanos storyline and offering fans an epic cinematic battle for the ages. The movie released in 2019 has had a lasting impact on the franchise, as it saw three of the original six Avengers (Iron Man, Black Widow, and Captain America) departing – Iron Man and Black Widow gave their lives to save others, while Captain America decided to retire to be with the one he loves. Now, only Hawkeye, Hulk, and Thor remain active, but they’ve had fewer significant roles since the Multiverse Saga started.
There’s talk that each of them will reappear in some form, although it could mark the end of the road for one within the series as well.
Chris Hemsworth’s Thor 5 will likely happen (and may be the final appearance for the God of Thunder)
Based on reports from film insider HWScoops (as shared through Film News), it appears that Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor in a fifth Marvel Cinematic Universe film following “Avengers: Secret Wars”. This potential movie could mark Hemsworth’s last portrayal of the character, according to the report. The news aligns with several rumors circulating about Thor 5 and its significance within the ongoing narrative of the God of Thunder.
In the latest portrayal of his character, Hemsworth featured in “Thor: Love and Thunder” released in 2022, where he vanquished Gorr the God Butcher and swore to shield his daughter from danger. The duo developed a strong bond, with Thor taking care of the child and them eventually forming a superhero team called Love and Thunder. Despite the film receiving mixed reviews among fans, the narrative could have served as an appropriate end to Thor’s journey, as it provided him with a sense of joy and emphasized the value of leadership – a concept that he had been learning throughout the entire series.
Despite not yet confirming Thor’s return officially, it’s strongly suggested that he will reappear in either “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Avengers: Secret Wars”. These upcoming films are speculated to feature a team of multiverse heroes joining forces to combat the menace of Doctor Doom, played once more by Robert Downey Jr.
This discussion brings us to the heart of the matter, which is the highly anticipated Thor 5. There have been whispers about this film for quite a while now, with fans eagerly waiting for Marvel Studios to officially approve it soon. However, it’s not likely to be released before Avengers: Secret Wars, implying that Thor will survive the events of that movie. This is certainly positive news, but it does leave us wondering if the fifth film will actually come to fruition.
Over the past few months, there have been rumors that Marvel intends to reprise Chris Hemsworth’s role as Thor for a final, more somber film to compensate for the lighter tone of the fourth installment. This is a project that Hemsworth seems particularly passionate about, expressing in an interview with Vanity Fair his desire to give fans one more movie following the previous one, as he feels a sense of obligation to them.
In the mid-credit scene of “Love and Thunder,” hints were subtly dropped suggesting a sequel featuring Hercules, who appears to be plotting revenge against Thor for vanquishing his father Zeus. Given the MCU’s penchant for capitalizing on such clues in its post-credit scenes, it seems likely that we’ll see “Thor 5.” The intrigue lies in whether this installment might shift its tone, potentially marking a spectacular conclusion. However, there’s one query left unanswered: Could this be another emotional farewell for yet another founding Avenger?
