Only Murders in the Building season 4 finale recap and ending explained
As a seasoned investigator who has spent years delving into the darkest corners of human nature, I must say that the finale of Only Murders in the Building left me both intrigued and entertained. The plot twists, the cliffhangers, and the unexpected revelations kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.
Following the conclusion of episode 9 of “Only Murders in the Building”, it was clear that the season finale would be action-packed, and indeed, it lived up to our expectations.
To summarize, in the second-to-last episode, we found out that Sazz’s apprentice was none other than Marshall. Earlier in the episode, he had murdered Glen Stubbins to keep him silent. In the final scene, Mabel stumbled upon a script for the Only Murders movie, written by Sazz. This suggests that Marshall might have stolen the script, which could have played a role in his possible motive for killing Sazz. However, was it really Marshall who killed Sazz and what were the circumstances surrounding her death? The finale provided answers to these questions while also setting up a suspenseful cliffhanger that leaves us excitedly anticipating season 5!
Before we start breaking down the finale, let me use this moment to warn you that spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 10 are ahead.
At the start of the final act, there’s a brief trip down memory lane as Sazz reflects on her upcoming life phase, specifically working on a script for the Only Murders film. After this glimpse into the past, we are swiftly brought back to the current moment.
Charles and Oliver make their way back to Charles’ residence, where they both begin pondering who could be the next target in their line of work, as it seems one crime leads to another corpse. As Oliver prepares for his upcoming wedding, he finds himself spiraling over Loretta potentially becoming the next victim. However, this worry is temporarily set aside when Charles receives a threatening text from Mabel: “Either call the police or keep away from her door, or I’ll take her life.
Charles hastens to the window and finds Mabel there, standing alongside Marshall, who just finished drawing the curtains.
Who killed Sazz on Only Murders in the Building?
Mabel tries to find a reason to depart when she realizes that Marshall was an apprentice of Sazz and is suspected of having killed Sazz and stolen her script. If there was any uncertainty about Marshall being the culprit, he admits to Mabel that he intended to kill only Sazz, but later had to eliminate Glen too in order to protect his secret.
In a clever move, Mabel steers the discussion away from Marshall’s impending action towards script revisions by pointing out errors in his script, effectively delaying the execution. Impressed by her quick thinking, Marshall consents to postpone the act until they have completed the script edits.
As I delve deeper into the mystery, it dawns on me that the connecting ledge between the windows could be the crucial element in uncovering how Charles committed the murder. Upon closer examination, I notice a footprint on his window – a detail that now makes perfect sense. Inspired by this revelation, I propose we use the ledge from Vince’s apartment to gain entry through the window and catch Marshall off guard, thus saving Mabel.
The team swiftly hurries towards Vince’s apartment, seeking his assistance to access Mabel’s through a window. Inspired by Sazz, Charles ventures out onto the ledge and starts navigating towards Mabel’s apartment. At this point, Oliver follows suit on the ledge, and both continue cautiously, moving towards Mabel’s apartment to ensure they don’t lose her.
As Charles and Oliver approach, Vince and Rudy assist them by creating a diversion, specifically by ringing the doorbell repeatedly (ding-dong). This allows Charles and Oliver to enter the apartment unnoticed. Using a tool similar to Eva Longoria’s multitool, Charles successfully disarms Marshall, turning the situation around. They then interrogate him to learn more about his motives.
Why did Marshall kill Sazz?
In a passionate outburst, Marshall shares his story about moving to Hollywood with aspirations of writing. He recalls that Sazz was the one who initially supported him in this journey. After being dismissed from the movie project, Sazz took the time to review his screenplay and inspired him to return to writing. It was during this period that she presented her script for ‘The Only Murder’ movie. To Marshall’s astonishment, he found Sazz’s work superior to anything he had penned before. In a moment of jealousy, he criticized the script as subpar.
Following the theft of the script and some alterations, Marshall distributed it. Bev approved the project quickly and prioritized its production, a fact which Sazz learned. She summoned Marshall to her apartment to discuss his theft of her script. Sazz informed Marshall that she was planning to travel to witness Charles’ Broadway debut, after which she would inform him about the movie before evicting him from her apartment.
From there, Marshall concluded that the only means to preserve his aspirations was to eliminate Sazz. He journeyed to New York, forced entry into Dudenoff’s residence, and bided his time to employ his hunting expertise to assassinate Sazz with a sniper rifle. She didn’t expire immediately, so he utilized his acrobatics training to navigate the ledges of the building until he reached Charles’ apartment, where he observed her perish and subsequently disposed of her remains.
After confessing, Marshall regains the gun and starts threatening the group while holding it. It seems there’s no escape, but then Marshall gets shot and dies through a window. That’s when the group notices Jan hiding in Charles’ apartment – she had been there all along, biding her time until they discovered who killed Sazz so she could take her revenge. It turned out that she never left the apartment.
It appears that the Only Murders team’s next step is to visit the movie set, as both Jan (the suspect) has been arrested and Sazz’s (the victim) killer has met their end.
As a gamer, I, along with Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, find myself on the movie set of “Only Murders.” Here, we witness Eva, Zach, and Eugene bringing their scenes to life. During breaks in filming, Bev approaches Mabel about her upcoming project. This is when Mabel shares her excitement for a story about a stuntwoman who went above and beyond to safeguard her friends. Bev seems a bit hesitant, and Mabel gently suggests that maybe this world isn’t meant for her.
Afterward, Charles has the opportunity to bid farewell to Sazz on the filming location; subsequently, we return to the Arconia for a wedding ceremony exclusive to the “Only Murders”!
Only Murders in the Building season 4 finale ending explained
On their cherished day, Oliver and Loretta celebrate surrounded by their dear ones, in a heartwarming ceremony held at the Arconia. During the festivities, the couple steal away for a touching dance, where Loretta confides in Oliver that she can’t ask him to abandon New York and move with her to New Zealand, since it would be impossible for him to expect her to leave Charles and Mabel behind.
Following their wedding, Charles and Mabel ascend upstairs where they encounter an intriguing woman, brilliantly portrayed by Téa Leoni. She reveals that she has sought them out, explaining that her objective is to enlist their aid in locating her husband, Nicky Caccimelio.
Mabel and Charles inform Sofia that they only look into murders occurring within a specific building, but when she shares Nicky’s story, she explains how it involves their building. Unfortunately, they decline to investigate, leaving Sofia disheartened. She offers them her business card, revealing her name as Sofia Caccimelio.
The narrative moves forward to the following day. Loretta bids farewell to Oliver and sets off, while Charles and Mabel complete their work on the new podcast. As they celebrate having seemingly survived a murder-free day, an unexpected tragedy unfolds: Lester is found dead in the hotel fountain as the season concludes.
It appears that we’ve got a sense of what direction Season 5 will take. The main focus of the season is likely to be solving Lester’s murder, while the enigma surrounding Nicky Caccimelio is set to serve as the supporting narrative.
2025 brings another round of intrigue and chaos with the return of Only Murders in the Building. For now, let’s spend some time speculating about who could have murdered Lester and uncovering the secret behind Nicky and Sofia Caccimelio!
