Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 7 recap and ending explained

As a seasoned detective with years of experience in solving intricate cases, I must say, this latest episode of Only Murders in the Building has truly piqued my interest. The revelation that the Westies could be behind Dudenoff’s murder is a bombshell that sends shockwaves through the Arconia.

Following episode 6’s somewhat puzzling use of unusual camera perspectives, I’m pleased to share that episode 7 of “Only Murders in the Building” appears to revert back to familiar ground, potentially making it one of the standout episodes this season so far.

Reminding you of a significant event from last week, the Only Murders in the Building gang discovered they had an unseen stalker who had been secretly monitoring them through hidden cameras in their apartments at the Arconia. This led to a hasty exit by Charles, Oliver, and Mabel. Now, with them on the run, where will they go next? The seventh episode of this season provides a swift response to that question, so let me issue the customary SPOILER ALERT before we delve too far into the plot details!

Following their escape from the Arconia, the team embarks towards Charles’s younger sister Doreen’s residence in Jersey. However, Mabel contacts Howard before they leave to inform him about their destination and ask for his assistance in investigating who is cashing Dudenoff’s checks. Also, she requests Oliver to send Loretta a message ending their relationship. Upon reaching Doreen’s place (portrayed by Melissa McCarthy), the group encounters an array of unforeseen visitors.

It’s revealed that Howard isn’t very good at hiding things, as he accidentally reveals the group’s location to Bev, Eva, Zach, Eugene, and Loretta. As the story progresses, we see them arriving at Doreen’s house in succession. Bev is struggling because the studio is considering cancelling the movie; Eva, Zach, and Eugene are concerned about their safety following the shooting incident; while Loretta jumps on a plane to New York after receiving a breakup message from Oliver in an attempt to find answers.

Do Loretta and Oliver break up? (No, it’s actually the opposite)

Following the receipt of Oliver’s breakup message, Loretta appears and demands answers. It was later discovered that when Oliver phoned her, the receptionist handed her phone to a stand-in for Loretta due to both of them being swathed in bandages that day. Eventually, Oliver confesses to Loretta about his near proposal while visiting her in LA out of concern for losing her, and he also reveals his secret account, Ronnie, which he used to keep tabs on her.

Loretta is deeply hurt by these disclosures, expressing that she had formed a strong bond with Ronnie and confided in her. She feels deceived by Oliver, and it seems their relationship might be over. Yet, surprisingly, Loretta takes up the fight for Oliver, engaging in a humorous altercation with Doreen instead.

After the altercation, Oliver expresses remorse to Loretta, admitting that when they first met, he let his temper get the best of him and may never regain control again. He acknowledges if she finds his behavior unmanageable, he wouldn’t judge her for leaving – a decision she temporarily makes by going to another room to fetch a bracelet from one of Doreen’s numerous dolls.

When Loretta re-enters the room, she informs Oliver that from their very first encounter, she sensed he was not quite right in the head and had no intentions of leaving. Instead, she expressed her readiness to endure his eccentricities for an entire lifetime. To seal this unusual proposition, she gives him the doll’s bracelet as a substitute ring, which Oliver eagerly accepts with great joy.

Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 7 ending explained: Who is cashing Dudenoff’s checks?

Immediately following their arrival, Mabel tried to get Loretta to divert the actors’ attention so she could delve into the case more deeply. However, Loretta persuaded her to employ the actors to work on the case instead. At first, Mabel was hesitant because it didn’t appear they would be of any assistance. But, Eva, Zach, and Eugene soon proved everyone wrong by their unexpected effectiveness.

Following their morning wake-up call, the actors confidently display what they’ve come to call their “murder wall,” and commence sharing their discoveries with the group. Zach breaks the news that they suspect whoever has been cashing Dudenoff’s checks is the one pursuing them, but they feel that the real mystery doesn’t stem from Sazz’s murder. Instead, Eugene shares that this enigma can be traced as far back as season 1 of their podcast, when they left several gaps unfilled in their initial investigation.

Zach mentioned that they initially suspected Sting had poisoned Oliver’s dog Winnie, but when they cleared him of suspicion, the mystery surrounding Winnie’s death was left unsolved. It was later that Oliver remembered thinking Jan was responsible, and it was then that Eva corrected them, revealing that the note found on his door – which read “End the podcast or I end you” – pointed instead to the culprit. The handwriting on the note suggested a left-handed person had written it, and since Jan is not left-handed as seen by her bassoon playing style, this became a crucial clue in identifying the real suspect.

After Eugene indicates the warning note found on Jan’s door, Mabel suddenly recalls that it matches a message they received from their stalker while living at the Arconia. As Eva explains the situation, it becomes clear that the killer has been tracking them since the beginning of the series, prompting Charles to understand why Sazz had been trying to convey this information to them.

But wait, there’s more!

Who is cashing Dudenoff’s checks?

Following Mabel’s call for assistance near the end of the episode, Howard headed to the local store (bodega) where the Dudenoff checks were being cashed out, hoping to gather some clues or leads.

Initially, the bodega owner seems unwilling to assist them, but upon observing the shopkeeper owns a security cat, Howard proposes a deal: if the owner allows him to scrutinize his account books on his podcast, he’ll feature the cat. Intrigued by this offer, the owner changes his mind. As Howard examines the ledgers, he detects several signatures, suggesting that more than one person is endorsing the checks.

As the show concludes, Howard sends a message to Mike, Doreen’s husband, revealing that he has identified the person responsible for Dudenoff’s death. Howard explains to Mike that he uncovered five distinct signatures, but the same phone number was consistently used. The scene transitions to Howard scrutinizing the surveillance footage from the bodega, where he identifies the Westies as the ones depositing the checks. He then dials the number and it’s Vince from the West Tower who answers, claiming to be Dudenoff.

In Howard’s message to Mike, it was disclosed that the Westies were responsible for Dudenoff’s killing. This information coincides with a moment where Vince concludes his call and informs the other Westies, “They found out.

As a gamer peering into the world of this thrilling game, I can’t help but wonder: Did the Westies truly off Dudenoff, or are they just riding the wave of his disappearance for their own gain? And who is it that’s tailing the Only Murders crew – the Westies, or is there another shadowy figure lurking in the shadows? With the season’s end rapidly approaching, I can feel the tension building and sense we’re about to uncover more pieces of this intricate puzzle!
