Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 6 recap and ending explained
As a seasoned gamer who has navigated countless virtual worlds and narrative twists, I must say that the latest episode of Only Murders in the Building left me feeling like I was stuck in a never-ending game of “Find the Killer.” The found footage meets mockumentary style was an interesting choice, but it felt more like a glitch in the system than a cohesive storytelling device.
Previous episode of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ ended dramatically, with the sound of gunfire echoing during a film shoot for their murder mystery, as someone cried out that someone had been wounded.
As a devoted fan, I couldn’t wait to unravel the mystery that unfolded after the nail-biting cliffhanger in season 4, episode 6 of “Only Murders in the Building.” The aftermath of the shooting was intriguingly portrayed, but I must admit, I found the way the subsequent episode was structured a bit disconcerting.
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 6.
In all honesty, I didn’t take a liking to this particular episode because it was presented in a way that combined found footage and mockumentary styles using camera shots, which I personally found to be quite disruptive. While others might find it engaging, for me, the unconventional format of the episode overshadowed what could have been another excellent installment of the series.
Moving on from where the last episode ended, we discovered that Glen Stubbins and Zach Galifianakis had been wounded by gunfire. Despite this, they’re both alive. However, it soon becomes evident that Oliver was the intended victim. Following the shooting, Mabel, Charles, and Oliver swiftly return to their apartment. In typical Oliver fashion, he confesses that while lying there, all he could ponder was Loretta. Unfortunately, his introspective moment is interrupted when Detective Williams shows up.
After telling the group that both Glen and Zach are alive, the group tries to tell her about Tawny’s footprint matching the footprint in the Dudenoff apartment, but she’s not exactly impressed. She does come with news though and lets the group know that Dudenoff is back in the city and has been cashing social security checks at a local bodega. As she prepares to leave, she makes it clear the group needs to be careful as someone is after them, drops the bombshell that Jan is also back in the city, and then leaves Charles with a parting gift: Sazz’s remains.
Who is Dudenoff?
After making a swift visit to the crime scene, I find myself intrigued and guided by the screenwriter of the Only Murders film to delve into the Brothers’ sisters’ debut production.
Mabel, Charles, and Oliver pursue the movie after someone sets the example, only to find out that the Brothers Sisters share a past with Vince Fish. Intrigued, they visit Vince to learn more about his connection with the Brothers Sisters. It turns out that Dudenoff was a film professor whom they all studied under, which explains why he appeared in the Brothers Sisters’ movie.
As a gamer, I shared with my group that the Brothers’ sisters were always Dudenoff’s top picks, going to lengths none other would for him. Later on, Charles dropped the bomb that Dudenoff had returned to town, but we were left in disbelief, convinced there was no way he could be back because if it was true, he surely would have given us a heads up.
Oliver tells Loretta how he really feels
After a close brush with death, Oliver phones Loretta, sharing his tale of being in LA where he had a choking incident and failed to propose as he intended. Emotions overflowing, Oliver expresses himself deeply, only to receive a “Ugh” from Loretta, leaving him bewildered. The viewers learn that at the time of his call, Loretta was engrossed in filming her show, wearing a full body wrap and thus unable to speak.
In a brief moment, Oliver’s self-pity ends as Howard’s dog sniffs over what remains to be Sazz, revealing two left shoulder plates. This finding indicates that Sazz wasn’t the sole body in the incinerator, suggesting that there was another victim and thus another murder within the building.
Only Murders in the Building season 4 episode 6 ending explained
Following a new murder discovery, Charles recalls Sazz mentioning another murder within the building to Jan earlier. They believe Dudenoff committed this murder, disposed of the body in the incinerator, and went into hiding when they began podcasting about it. Their concern is that he’s now threatening them because he can’t tolerate their investigation, which might explain how the Brothers sisters became involved in the situation.
Mabel sends Detective Williams a text with the serial number from the second plate, hoping it will help identify the owner.
After a discussion, the team chooses to confront the Brothers sisters with the intention of making them break under stress and disclose their involvement in the crime. Their strategy proves effective as the Brothers sisters admit to standing in for Dudenoff on the night of the murder and confess their willingness to do anything for him, even take a life for him.
While questioning the sisters, Mabel receives a text from Detective Williams stating that the second plate was linked to Dudenoff, causing everyone to understand that Dudenoff is the second victim. Stunned by this revelation, the sisters disclose to the group that they took on the Only Murders film project as an opportunity to get closer to Dudenoff, and it had been years since they last communicated with him directly.
Charles suspected they were merely pretending, so he decided to investigate by examining a large bag they had been carrying. To his surprise, it turned out to be an oversized camera case – not for weapons, but for cameras that the sisters had set up in the group’s homes as part of their studio contracts, requiring them to have cameras installed in their apartments.
In the course of dismantling hidden cameras, Charles suspects one of these to be planted by his sisters. Yet, it turns out that an unidentified observer has been keeping tabs on the group throughout, as evidenced by a secret texter sending videos of them in their apartment and a chilling message: “I’ve Been Watching You.
Shaken, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel decides they need to leave the Arconia and away they go.
Which party is observing this gathering? The motive behind Dudenoff’s murder remains a mystery, but it seems that someone has been probing into matters linked to him under his name. We’ll need to tune in for episode 7 to discover the hidden truths that lie ahead!
