After catching wind of Sazz’s last Instagram post, I found myself teaming up with Charles, Mabel, and Oliver. We ventured off to Concussions, hoping to unearth some answers about our friend’s mysterious demise. However, the bartender remained tight-lipped, turning down our attempts at bribes, and instead called us out for using Sazz’s death as a topic for our podcast.

While Charles is trying to persuade the group, an entertaining and unforeseen moment occurs when Paul Rudd appears as Glen Stubbins, the stand-in for his season 3 character Ben Glenroy. As Glen readies himself to escort them out, they catch sight of a puzzling woman entering the rear room, which briefly reveals the area illuminated in purple – the same lighting where Sazz’s last Instagram photo was taken, catching Mabel’s eye.

At a crucial moment when it seems the mission is about to fall apart, Glen steps outside and requests Charles’ aid by proposing him as his replacement stunt double. Intrigued, they agree to this arrangement and negotiate a deal with Glen. If successful, they will secure him a role in the Only Murders film. Upon relieving his tense back, the feeling transports Charles back into his dreamlike state where once more, he perceives Sazz attempting to reach Paradise, shortly before he awakens and expresses his concern that he might have been the problematic relationship Sazz was trying to leave behind.

Mabel unearths the Westies secret

In another part of the show, Mabel asks Howard to keep watch at the Dudenoff flat as part of her squatting scheme since someone needs to be there constantly. However, while Mabel is out with Charles and Oliver, a flyer advertising auditions for the Only Murders film catches Howard’s attention, prompting him to leave without hesitation.

In a twist of irony, as Howard unsuccessfully pursues the movie role that appears to have gone to Josh Gad, Oliver and Mabel head to Oliver’s apartment. There, Oliver confides in Mabel about his complicated relationship with Loretta. After discovering a mysterious man in her photos, Oliver secretly monitored Loretta using a temporary account, seeking information. Eventually, Mabel persuades him to abandon this spy tactic.

In a private conversation, Oliver shares with Mabel that he nearly proposed to Loretta during their time in LA before they returned home. However, due to apprehension stemming from past unsuccessful marriages, he decided against it. To explain his feelings, Oliver says he’s worried this relationship might not work out. Their discussion is abruptly ended when Howard bursts into the apartment, causing Mabel to understand that someone else is inside and her plan could be compromised.

However, it’s then they disclose their true activities – they are uncovered as being part of a rent control scheme linked to Dudenoff.

They clarify to Mabel that they’ve been unlawfully subletting apartments controlled by rent, which Dudenoff supposedly leased many years back. Although they’ve encountered Dudenoff at some point throughout the years, they emphasize his relocation to Portugal and share that they have an agreement enabling them to reside in the building for a minimal rental fee of $200 per month, paid directly to Dudenoff.

It appears that the voice heard over the ham radio was Helga, Rudy’s former girlfriend. She hails from Finland and the group suspects she might not be entirely sane. Vince proposes to include Mabel in their deal, provided she keeps quiet about it on the podcast. Despite the enticing offer, Mabel indicates that she will inform Charles and Oliver about it, which she ultimately does.

Charles finds Paradise

Towards the end of the show, Charles opts to step in and arrange a mock funeral for Sazz, usually handled by a stunt double, at the Concussions bar, despite being informed earlier that it wouldn’t be feasible due to the lack of a body.

When Charles agrees to step in for Sazz during the stuntman’s funeral, he doesn’t fully grasp that this ritual involves Sazz’s friends paying tribute to their deceased friend by pretending to pour a drink and then striking the casket with a shatter-prone glass. As Charles endures the initial impacts, his tolerance is tested when Glen accidentally uses a genuine bottle. Overwhelmed, Charles loses consciousness and is momentarily transported back to his past experiences with Sazz while working on the film Brazzos.

In his mind, Charles reminisces about Sazz sharing her aspiration to establish the Sazz Pataki Impact Academy upon her retirement. He proposed purchasing the site where they filmed, often referred to as the woods, which was also depicted in Charles’s past visions, that he had previously seen.

Following his regain of consciousness, Oliver, Mabel, and Charles venture to the property Sazz acquired in Paradise, NJ. Upon reaching the structure, they detect a sound and enter to discover Bev Melon (the film producer of Only Murders) within, armed. As the scene concludes, Bev directs the weapon towards the group, warning them to remain still or she’ll destroy their minds as she pulls the trigger.

It’s possible that Bev isn’t as we initially perceived, or this could simply be a case of misinterpretation leading to a surprising twist in the upcoming episode. Whatever it is, we’re eagerly anticipating where the season will take us next and uncovering what Bev’s true intentions might be!
