Onimusha: Way of the Sword Sees the Series Finally Return… in 2026

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for classic Capcom titles and a deep-rooted affection for the Onimusha series, I can’t help but feel a rollercoaster of emotions upon hearing about the forthcoming release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The excitement is palpable, yet tinged with a touch of melancholy as I grapple with the reality that we have to wait more than two years for its arrival.

It’s thrilling to hear that Capcom is releasing a new mainline game in the Onimusha series, titled “Onimusha: Way of the Sword,” since we last saw one in 2006 with “Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.” However, it might make you shed a tear to know that the release date is still over a year away. Aww, shucks!

Similar to “Onimusha: Warlords” and its follow-ups, “Way of the Sword” will revisit the series’ dark fantasy interpretation of feudal Japan, where samurai engage in combat with the supernatural. Unlike the older “Onimusha” games that utilized static pre-rendered backdrops, this one offers a fully 3D experience.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set in Kyoto during the early Edo era, a time when peace was fragile. Soon, a dark force known as ‘Malice’ descends upon the ancient city, turning it into a chilling place filled with Genma demons. The first trailer unveils the solitary samurai hero of the game, equipped with the Oni Gauntlet that can absorb souls, and involved in fierce battles.

2026 will see the arrival of “Onimusha: Way of the Sword” on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and personal computers (PC). You can get a sneak peek at it via the trailer provided below.
