One Tree Hill was a hugely popular teen drama in the early 2000s, and helped make many actors famous, including singer Jana Kramer. Although she played a significant role as Alex Dupré in the show’s later seasons, she wasn’t in the series finale. Now, Kramer is revealing why she missed it, and the reason is disappointing.
Kramer became part of the One Tree Hill cast in Season 7, starting in 2009. Initially, her character, Alex, was portrayed as demanding and difficult as the new face of Clothes Over Bros, but she began to change as she spent more time in Tree Hill. As Alex pursued a music career, Kramer herself also focused on music. She shared on the Drama Queens podcast wrap party that this musical focus led to her not being able to appear in the show’s final episode.
My record label pulled me off the tour, insisting I needed to focus on radio promotion. It was frustrating because my male colleagues were allowed to do both – tour and the radio circuit. I kept pointing out that they were managing both, so why couldn’t I? It just didn’t seem fair.
Viewers last saw Alex during Season 9, Episode 2, when she embarked on a national tour. Many were hoping she’d reappear before the show ended, but that didn’t happen. It’s frustrating to learn that she wanted to come back, but her record label wouldn’t allow it, especially since other cast members were able to balance both commitments. Ultimately, it’s sad that Alex didn’t get the satisfying ending she hoped for as a contestant on The Masked Singer.
I really wish I’d had a chance to properly say goodbye to that role. It just ended abruptly, and that was disappointing. Acting is my biggest passion, second only to being a mom, so not getting closure with the character still feels a bit incomplete. I’m hoping maybe there’s a chance to revisit her someday.
With Hilarie Burton-Morgan and Sophia Bush working on a potential One Tree Hill sequel, there’s hope fans might finally get closure for Alex’s story. While Netflix hasn’t confirmed the show yet, and it’s unclear who from the original cast will return, there’s a chance Bethany Joy Lenz (who played Alex) could reprise her role if her schedule allows. This could finally reveal what Alex has been doing all these years and give her character the ending fans have been hoping for.
Kramer still appears to be good friends with her former One Tree Hill co-stars. This was clear at the Drama Queens wrap party, and she’s also been on the Drama Queens rewatch podcast, which is hosted by Bush, Bethany Joy Lenz, and Robert Buckley as they revisit the later seasons of the show.

Get both Disney+ and Hulu for as little as $12.99 a month! This bundle is perfect for revisiting classic shows like One Tree Hill and High School Musical, while also giving you access to the newest releases from Marvel, Star Wars, and FX. It’s a great value for the price.
It’s unclear how Alex’s story would have unfolded if Kramer hadn’t left the show. After everything she went through, both in her personal life and career, it would have been satisfying to see her character continue throughout the original series. However, with a sequel in the works, I’m optimistic we’ll see more of Alex Dupré soon. Until then, we can always rewatch the original series on Hulu.
