One to watch! Broadchurch star’s “bold” and “gritty” new crime drama is a ‘twist on the genre’

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement for the upcoming gritty and audacious crime drama that Matthew Gravelle, the talented star of Broadchurch, is set to unveil. This production promises to captivate us in ways we wouldn’t want to miss!

In Wales, the town known as Mudtown, or Ar y Ffin, unfolds a tale centered around a magistrate. Her professional and personal lives become intricate when her kin unwittingly involve themselves in the local criminal underworld. This series offers a fresh spin on the genre by introducing an unexpected twist.

The fresh TV shows “U&Alibi” and “S4C,” initially broadcast in Wales back in December, were created by Hannah Daniel, recognized for her role in “EastEnders,” and Georgia Lee, who is not only an actress but also serves as a magistrate in real life.

The program is distinctive because it was simultaneously produced in both English and Welsh, with the Welsh version being the first to air in 2024.

In the gaming world, I find myself stepping into the shoes of Claire Lewis Jones, a seasoned Magistrate, who’s tasked with overseeing cases at the Newport Magistrates Court. However, her personal life is far from tranquil, as she grapples with a whirlwind of troubles outside the courtroom.

The plot thickens as Ned Humphries, a close friend of Beca from childhood, stands accused of arson. This situation tests Claire’s allegiance to her community. Muddy waters become murkier still with the emergence of the local crime lord, Saint Pete.

Claire and Saint Pete have known each other for a long time. Could her past catch up with her in the present? As she becomes more involved in the case, suspicions about her daughter’s new boyfriend, Sonny Higgins, a suspected troublemaker, intensify. In the process of digging deeper, Claire discovers a complex network of illegal activities that might endanger her and her family.

U&Alibi guarantees an exciting series that should not be missed by enthusiasts of deep crime dramas. This captivating production skillfully blends raw emotions with significant social issues.

Previously discussing the production of “Mudtown”, producer Hannah Thomas (known for Mr Burton, Steeltown Murders) expressed her enthusiasm: “I’m genuinely thrilled to have the opportunity to present this captivating new drama not only to Welsh viewers but also to audiences worldwide.

I believe that viewers will find Newport captivating on screen, given its cinematic charm, and our story offers a fresh, modern take on the genre. The characters crafted by Hannah Daniel and Georgia Lee are truly remarkable, and I can’t wait for audiences to meet them as our series progresses.

Last year, Daniel and Lee expressed their excitement about portraying the unique atmosphere of the magistrate’s court, steeped in genuine South Walian culture, in a statement. They are eagerly looking forward to collaborating with their strong partners to bring these captivating characters and exhilarating tale to life on screen.

Rhys Carter, along with Chris Forster, serves as the director for the show. This production is a joint commission between S4C and All3Media International, known for shows like “Trigger Point” and “Boarders”. The series is produced by Severn Screen, the team behind “Havoc”.
