The BBC is showing a classic episode of mystery drama Miss Marple on television tonight.
From 1984 to 1992, BBC broadcast adaptations of all twelve of Agatha Christie’s original Miss Marple novels, featuring Joan Hickson in the lead character.
This evening, starting at 8:00 PM on BBC Four, the fifth adaptation of ‘The Murder at the Vicarage’, which originally aired on Christmas Day in 1986, will air on television.

The narrative unfolds around Miss Marple’s detective work following the Colonel’s demise in a clergyman’s office. Reminiscent of Christie’s style, it transpires that almost every character becomes a potential suspect.
The adaption has received praise from both critics and audiences, as Radio Times stated: “Among all Miss Marple’s adventures, The Murder at the Vicarage stands out as truly representative.
In IMDB, a viewer commented: “The story featuring Miss Marple’s debut, initially published in 1930, was cleverly brought up-to-date to the 1950s by author T.R. Bowen. The dialogue is sharp and the performers are seasoned acting professionals.
A different viewer praised the adaptation as having “an engaging, humorous screenplay and top-notch production quality,” further commending Joan Hickson by stating, “Her subtle charm and profound wisdom make this production truly captivating. In my opinion, she embodies Miss Marple to perfection.
A third observer described it as a “skillfully constructed, clever puzzle”, further noting: “The storyline is reminiscent of a traditional plot – one that might have been presented in an overt fashion, with the culprit appearing obvious.
