One Store eyes to take on the dominance of Apple and Google in the global mobile app market
As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen the mobile gaming landscape evolve from basic Snake games to immersive, high-definition experiences. The emergence of new players like One Store in the app market is a breath of fresh air that could potentially shake up the current monopoly held by Apple and Google.
One Store, a domestic marketplace from South Korea, is preparing to take on the worldwide supremacy of Apple and Google in the mobile app market. At a press conference held on August 28, 2024, the company revealed its bold plans for global growth and expansion in the industry.
One Store will look to offer a country-tailored personalized experience
This marketplace intends to adopt a strategy known as hyperlocalization, where they aim to provide customized local services that cater to the unique requirements of each nation’s mobile market within their app store. In other words, they are striving to deliver a more tailored user experience compared to Apple and Google’s “one-size-fits-all” approach.
Regarding this matter, the CEO of One Store, Jeon Dong-jin, stated: “We plan to provide region-specific services, setting us apart from Apple and Google’s universal app store policies. Our goal is for One Store to be the leading global app market by 2030, achieving competitiveness through tailored offerings based on local demands.”
Epic Games endorsed this action, with Nate Nanzer, their Vice President and Head of Global Partnerships, confirming that they will add mobile versions to the One Store as it becomes available. The One Store, which has already been successful in Taiwan and Singapore, is preparing to broaden its global influence.
The business intends to debut in the U.S. market around the end of this year, with ambitions to expand into the European Union in early 2025. Significantly, the EU launch will support both Android and iOS systems, as Apple has endorsed ONE Store for its platform.
The Apple and Google mobile market monopoly might be in jeopardy
It’s no secret that for Android and iOS devices, the Google Play Store and App Store have been the primary marketplaces. However, Epic Games has entered the scene with its long-awaited mobile marketplace, the Epic Games Store, which launched mid-August this year. This newcomer is aiming to challenge the dominance of these two giants, as demonstrated by making Rocket League Sideswipe exclusive to their store.

In the future, the development of new marketplaces is likely to bring significant benefits to consumers, as there have been numerous complaints about the monopolistic control these two companies exert over app distribution. The contentious 30% fee charged on in-app purchases has long been a subject of debate, and it would be advantageous for games to be able to appear in various marketplaces that impose minimal fees instead.
