As a gamer who grew up in the 90s, I can fondly remember the days when Star Trek and Sliders ruled our TV screens. Jerry O’Connell, a name synonymous with both franchises, has expressed his desire for a Sliders revival, which is music to my ears.
Star Trek: Lower Decks is wrapping up after completing five seasons. This animated series carved out a suitable space among Star Trek enthusiasts, although it never achieved universal acclaim from the entire fanbase. It served as an entertaining source of humor for many and offered opportunities to newcomers who might not have had a chance to join the Star Trek franchise otherwise. One such individual is Jerry O’Connell.
Over the years, O’Connell has built up a considerable acting career. His initial success came as a child, sharing the screen with Wil Wheaton from Star Trek in Stand by Me. Later on, he secured significant roles as an adult, such as his part as a supporting character in Jerry McGuire starring Tom Cruise, and as the lead in less noteworthy movies like Joe’s Apartment or Kangaroo Jack. Additionally, he has been involved in other popular franchises, including Scream 2, which was the sequel to the original Scream film.
For numerous Star Trek enthusiasts, it isn’t Lower Decks that he is famously associated with. Instead, it’s a sci-fi series from the 1990s that became surprisingly popular; Sliders. This show managed to be a stealth success for Fox, and despite the fact that science fiction wasn’t as appreciated during that time, particularly on a prominent network like Fox, fans were drawn to it.
It seems that if someone enjoyed Star Trek, they might have also found appeal in Sliders. This show was quite distinctive during its era. In it, O’Connell and his group would ‘slide’ between different alternate realities, aiming to return to their original universe. Reminiscent of another series that stemmed from Star Trek, Quantum Leap, the concept involves traveling through time rather than jumping into others’ lives or taking control. However, in Sliders, the crew remained as themselves, opening up the intriguing possibility of encountering alternate versions of themselves.
Regarding Lower Decks, O’Connell expressly conveyed his desire for a comeback of the beloved ’90s sci-fi classic. He further mentioned that he attempted to initiate a project, stating that he did so.
Hey there! As a die-hard fan, I’m urging you, Universal, to consider a remake of [the show/movie]. I understand that it might be for Paramount Plus, but it’s not accessible on that platform yet. I even reached out to them, hoping for a response, but unfortunately, they haven’t gotten back to me.
Restoring “Slider” to its former glory would undoubtedly be a blast, yet considering the current era of streaming services, it appears quite challenging. Back in 2019, when nostalgia was at an all-time high, and everyone wanted to revive what they loved from two decades ago, it might have been possible. However, nowadays, most streaming platforms seem to be facing financial constraints and are primarily focusing on shows with massive potential for success rather than reviving older series.
Sure glad we got rid of cable for this new hellscape of entertainment.
