After a wait of over two years, Season 2 of Netflix’s One Piece is here, and fans will likely find it was worth the anticipation. As the Straw Hat crew enters the Grand Line, the new season delivers a bigger and more exciting adventure, with incredible new islands and challenging enemies around every corner.
While Season 2 of One Piece introduces some powerful new enemies like Captain Smoker and the Baroque Works, it also brings several new friends to the Straw Hat crew. The most notable addition is Dr. Tony Tony Chopper, who joins the team. But Chopper isn’t the only new face – the series also unexpectedly introduces Brook earlier than fans anticipated.
One Piece Season 2 Gives Brook An Early Debut
Meet the Straw Hats’ Future Musician in Episode 2
In Season 2, Episode 2 of One Piece, viewers get a major surprise: they’re unexpectedly introduced to Brook, who will later become the Straw Hat crew’s musician, through a flashback. The episode focuses on Crocus telling Luffy the story of Laboon and how he ended up caring for the whale, showing us the entire Rumbar Pirates crew in the process.
The cast includes Richard Gau as Captain Calico Yorki and Martial Batchamen as Brook. Batchamen perfectly embodies Brook’s signature look – his afro and round glasses – and wears the same outfit Brook has when the Straw Hats meet him as a skeleton on Thriller Bark. He also nails Brook’s unique laugh and delivers a powerful singing voice befitting the title of One Piece’s Soul King.
The live-action series expands on a story only briefly touched upon in the manga and anime. Instead of just a quick mention, Season 2 gives the Rumbar Pirates a full introduction through a longer flashback. The episode also shows Brook making a final vow to Laboon before the pirates set sail, performing their signature song, Binks’ Brew.
Netflix’s One Piece Is a Masterclass in Live-Action Adaptation
Martial Batchamen is a fantastic choice to play Brook, especially considering Brook’s title as the ‘Soul King.’ Because soul music originated within African-American culture, it’s fitting that a Black actor would portray this character, and Batchamen has delivered a perfect performance so far.
Charithra Chandran’s portrayal of Vivi has effectively silenced any doubts about her casting. While it might be some time before we see Brook appear in the live-action series – the Thriller Bark arc is still a ways off – this first look at Vivi has already generated a lot of excitement among fans.
The live-action version of One Piece introduces the Rumbar Pirates earlier than the manga does. However, this change actually makes the show better, and it’s a welcome improvement to the original story.
When Laboon was first introduced in the One Piece manga, Eiichiro Oda probably hadn’t yet developed the character of Brook, the Rumbar Pirates, or any future role for Laboon itself. That’s why the connection revealed later between Brook and Laboon came as such a surprise to readers.
The live-action series has an advantage because it’s based on a long-running story and already knows what happens later on. This allows it to subtly set up future plot points and improve the original story. Season 2 has been a great demonstration of this so far.
