The legendary God Valley Incident involved a huge cast of powerful figures, including the most famous pirate crews from the Grand Line and the God Knights – and that’s just the beginning. Even Imu, the self-proclaimed Demon King from *One Piece*, appeared by taking control of Jaygarcia Saturn, forcing Rocks D. Xebec to fight with everything he had. Realizing he couldn’t defeat Imu and Saturn on his own, Rocks formed an alliance with Edward Newgate (Whitebeard) and Kaido to face this overwhelming threat.
It’s easy for fans to see the connection between the Rocks Pirates and Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji – the Straw Hat crew’s powerful trio. But this alliance of Rocks, Whitebeard, and Kaido has some important differences that make it even more interesting. While they might seem impressive together, this team was ultimately destined to fail, which fits the tragic story of the Rocks Pirates as revealed in the God Valley Incident.
The New Monster Trio of God Valley Has a Fatal Flaw
Many *One Piece* fans are excited about the newly revealed team-up between Rocks D. Xebec, Whitebeard (Newgate), and Kaido, and some even think it’s more impressive than other famous trios. This is partly because Rocks and his allies are incredibly powerful pirates, and Kaido has recently become even stronger. This combination feels like it could potentially survive a battle against even the highest powers, like Imu and Saturn, even if they don’t win. The newness of this team adds to its appeal. While this Rocks trio is definitely as strong as Luffy’s team, and perhaps even stronger, a great shonen anime team needs more than just powerful members. Even in a series like *Dragon Ball*, where strength is key, a team’s dynamic is just as important.
In *One Piece*, strength is important when groups like the Rocks crew and Luffy’s crew face tough enemies, but teamwork and trust are just as crucial. If three powerful fighters don’t work well together and trust each other, they’re likely to fail. While it’s early to judge the current Rocks trio, they don’t seem likely to stay together for long, especially since we haven’t seen them fight as a team yet in this flashback. Eventually, Rocks will meet his end, and Kaido, Edward Newgate, and Charlotte Linlin will all go on to create their own pirate crews. As fans already know, the Rocks crew doesn’t have much genuine connection – they’re more like a collection of strong individuals following Rocks, rather than a true crew with him as their captain. It was only a matter of time before they fell apart, no matter what Imu or Saturn might do.
The new Monster Trio in *One Piece* seems incredibly powerful, but their story feels like a temporary detour. The Rocks Pirates, being selfish and wild, are too different from the Straw Hats to offer a lasting parallel. The story already hints that the Rocks Pirates will lose to Garp and Gol D. Roger, which emphasizes the Straw Hats’ strength. Kaido and Newgate won’t be able or willing to save them, meaning this impressive trio won’t last long. While it might seem dismissive, the Rocks trio largely functions as a throwback to Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji’s dynamic. There’s still a chance for the current flashback to give them more depth, but ultimately, the Rocks trio seems to exist only to set up the events of the God Valley Incident and won’t play a significant role beyond it.
One Piece’s Latest Manga Team-Up Highlights the Fun of Trios
Shonen manga and anime often play with and reinvent common story elements, which is always enjoyable to see. Series like *One Piece* and others in the genre frequently rely on familiar tropes, so it’s good when stories, including *One Piece*, try something new, even with basic concepts like groups of three. While it’s common for shows like *One Piece*, *Demon Slayer*, *Jujutsu Kaisen*, and *Naruto* to start with a core trio that expands into a larger team, even dedicated fans will tire of these formulas if they aren’t done well.
The God Valley Incident is a unique part of the *One Piece* story because it lacks clear heroes. Instead, it features a clash between flawed characters and dangerous opponents on a secluded island. With the Straw Hats and Heart Pirates absent during this flashback, Rocks emerges as the closest thing to a leader. While he isn’t a figure like Joy Boy or Nika, Rocks actively fights against the harsh rules of Imu and is driven by a desperate desire to protect his family. Compared to other pirates involved in the God Valley Incident, Rocks has surprisingly honorable motivations for his actions.
Honestly, I’m loving how the Rocks Pirates, Whitebeard, and Kaido are stepping up during this crazy flashback! It’s like we don’t have a clear ‘good guy’ right now, and they’re filling that space, but in their own, wonderfully unpredictable way. They’re not going to be the ones to save the world, and I don’t think they’ll even make it *through* this arc, but it’s so cool to see the classic ‘trio’ dynamic flipped on its head. This arc is really establishing the Rocks crew as something special – they’re the closest thing we’ll get to traditional heroes on this island, besides Dragon and Kuma, of course. Whether they rely on friendship or not, Rocks is absolutely *owning* this story, becoming a legendary figure in his own right!
