One Piece anime takes first hiatus in years...thanks to the One Piece Netflix show

As a lifelong cinephile who has been following the anime scene since the days of VHS tapes and Saturday morning cartoons, I must say that the news about One Piece‘s temporary hiatus to make more One Piece left me both intrigued and amused.

Currently, the popular anime series “One Piece” boasts a total of 1,122 episodes, while its manga has been in publication since 1997. This long-lasting success is largely due to an extraordinary dedication to maintaining consistency, a trait that fans have grown to rely on from the franchise’s creator and lead creative force, Eiichiro Oda.

Currently, One Piece is experiencing one of its brief absences and won’t resume until mid-November. Contrary to what you might assume, Oda isn’t just enjoying a break; instead, he’s taking a hiatus to produce even more One Piece content. According to Comicbook.com, Oda is in South Africa, visiting the set of Netflix’s second season of the live-action adaptation of the beloved anime.

It appears that the production of the “One Piece” manga and anime has been paused temporarily, as Oda is focusing on the live-action adaptation. Fans had initially expressed concerns about this new take, but its first season was met with positive feedback. One reason why “One Piece” seems to be faring better than other anime series that have been adapted into live-action, like Netflix’s 2021 revamp of “Cowboy Bebop”, is because its original creator remains actively involved in the project.

Indeed, when Netflix contacted Tomorrow Studios, the company producing One Piece, Oda made clear that he wouldn’t agree to a live-action adaptation unless he had full creative control over it. In fact, he was granted veto power, ensuring that his decision on One Piece was final and unquestionable, guaranteeing that the project couldn’t move forward without his approval.

That’s what makes all iterations of One Piece consistently great; it’s Oda all the way down.

Although the second season of the live-action adaptation doesn’t have a confirmed release date just yet, enthusiasts should look forward to new installments coming out in 2025. For those who are already hooked, Season 1 is available for streaming on Netflix at present. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can delve into the extensive 1,122-episode archive of the original anime as well. The live-action version has been acclaimed as an ideal starting point for those intrigued by One Piece, but who might find the vast anime episode count overwhelming.

We can’t wait for more!
