As a gamer and action movie enthusiast with a soft spot for military thrillers, I couldn’t be more excited about the latest addition to Netflix’s lineup – “Land of Bad.” This film, starring the powerhouse trio of Russell Crowe, Liam Hemsworth, and Luke Hemsworth, has already made a name for itself as one of the hidden gems of this year’s action movie scene.
As a film enthusiast who’s spent years immersing myself in the world of cinema, I can confidently say that this year has been a rollercoaster ride for action movie lovers. With an impressive lineup of movies hailing from various parts of the globe, it feels like there’s no shortage of adrenaline-pumping flicks to keep us entertained. And just when I thought I’d seen it all, a new under-the-radar entry has caught my attention: Land of Bad.
During a distressed rescue operation in the Philippines, the drone operator (Crowe) is assigned to support his stranded team members (Liam Hemsworth, Luke Hemsworth, Ricky Whittle, Milo Ventimiglia). Amidst red tape from the military and frequent interruptions by soldiers at his base engrossed in March Madness, Crowe utilizes his drone skills from a distance to aid his team, as they confront dangerous adversaries while trying to leave the jungle.
William Eubank, director of “Underwater,” brings us the straightforward genre film “Land of Bad.” This movie focuses more on delivering well-executed action than on innovating the genre’s storyline. The film’s intense and exhilarating scenes primarily consist of shootouts combined with drone battles. These sequences are masterfully crafted on a budget of $18.7 million, resulting in impressive set pieces that leave audiences breathless.

The Hemsworths, including Liam, exhibit remarkable strength; Liam in particular shares the lead role with Crowe in the film. Milo Ventimiglia delivers an authentic portrayal as a special forces soldier. Robbie Crowe excels as Eddie “Reaper” Grimm, the grumpy drone pilot, displaying unwavering commitment to his team and antagonistic attitude towards his superiors. In Crowe’s later career, he has taken on more roles with these characteristics.
If you’re in search of a contemplative war film that explores the deeper significance of conflict or challenges the genre, I would recommend looking elsewhere. However, if a military thriller with intense and gripping tactical scenes, an engaging cast, and well-developed characters resonates with you, then I strongly suggest giving Land of Bad a try.
Land of Bad is now streaming on Netflix.
