One of the few good ideas in Star Trek: Picard could work in Starfleet Academy
As a dedicated Star Trek fan who’s seen more episodes than I care to count, I can’t contain my excitement about the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! With a time jump of 900 years, it’s not just a new show, but a fresh chapter in the vast Star Trek universe.
A fresh installment of Star Trek is being developed, titled “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.” This upcoming series is set approximately 900 years after the storylines of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Prodigy, Lower Decks, and Picard. Essentially a spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery, both shows will share the same timeframe in Star Trek’s expansive universe.
As a dedicated gamer diving back into the expansive universe of Star Trek: Discovery, I was expecting only characters from the latest seasons to reappear, given the massive time leap and the ship’s permanent journey into the future. However, it seems that the creators have a surprise in store for us. Contrary to my initial assumptions, the show will indeed resurrect one character hailing from the earlier epoch of Star Trek, defying the chronological flow of events we’ve come to know.
After previously starring in both Voyager and Prodigy, Robert Picardo is coming back to the Star Trek universe yet again. His return to the franchise following a gap of nearly 25 years with Prodigy saw him resuming his character from Voyager. The character “The Doctor” made a comeback in the show, which many viewers found exciting. However, some fans thought that the animated style didn’t allow Picardo to express emotions as effectively as we were accustomed to during the Voyager era.
Once more, he’s stepping into live-action as The Doctor, now set in Starfleet Academy. In this turn, his character will be 900 years ahead, yet visibly around 25 years older than his Voyager days. Despite being a hologram, the reason for this aging isn’t explicitly explained. However, there might be a creative solution to address this concept.
Although Star Trek: Picard had its highs and lows undeniably, they did come up with an intriguing concept. In season two, the show reintroduced the beloved Star Trek character Q, a god-like alien race that doesn’t age. Interestingly enough, the actor who portrayed Q, John de Lancie, has noticeably aged in the nearly 30 years between the end of The Next Generation and Picard.
So, what could he do in that situation? In the series, Q chose to make himself appear close in age to Jean-Luc Picard, so that Picard wouldn’t be bothered by the fact that Q doesn’t age.
The Doctor might employ a strategy akin to this: He can manipulate his appearance to seem older, making conversations more straightforward. Alternatively, he could grow old at a gradual pace, albeit much slower than usual. This premature aging could be attributed to a specialized program detailed in his records.
Either way, the Doctor should have a pretty plausible explanation for why he looks a bit older.
