In 2013, the British crime drama Broadchurch debuted and quickly became one of the best in the genre. Many fans still consider it a high point for crime dramas. Now, it’s coming to Netflix UK as part of their curated “worth the wait” collection.
Whether you’re a returning fan or completely new to the show, we think it’s time you started watching Broadchurch. Here’s why it deserves to be your next TV obsession.
Okay, let’s be real – David Tennant and Olivia Colman teaming up as detectives is already enough to get me excited! Tennant is fantastic in crime dramas – I remember being completely gripped by his performance as Dennis Nilsen in Des, and he was brilliant as the slightly shady Ian Ventham in the new Thursday Murder Club. But before all that, there was Broadchurch. I still think about that show – his character, Detective Inspector Alec Hardy, led the investigation into the awful murder of 11-year-old Danny Latimer, and it really shook up the whole town of Broadchurch. It was such a powerful series.
What to Read Next
Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller, a local from Colman’s, provides a much-needed emotional stability for the newly arrived Hardy. Because she was raised in the area, she understands the people and the community well.
Their contrasting personalities create tension and interest in the story. Hardy is cautious and offers an outsider’s viewpoint, often echoing what the audience might be thinking. Meanwhile, Miller initially approaches situations with optimism, eager to believe the best in those around her.
What makes Broadchurch truly special isn’t just its mystery. While the show, created and written by Chris Chibnall, certainly keeps you guessing with a classic whodunnit, it also deeply explores the pain of loss and how tragedy affects an entire community.
The story’s depth and intricate details add significant emotional impact, making the drama more meaningful and staying with viewers long after they’ve learned who committed the crime.
Considering Broadchurch originally aired over a decade ago, it was remarkably forward-thinking for its time and remains one of the few fictional shows like it. Happy Valley, which debuted around the same period, also deserves mention as being similarly innovative.
In addition to its two main stars, Broadchurch featured a talented supporting cast. Notably, Jodie Whittaker – who later became famous as the first female Doctor – gave a powerful performance as Beth Latimer, a mother dealing with immense grief.
The show has also featured many other well-known actors over the years, including Sir Lenny Henry, Vicky McClure, Jonathan Bailey – known for his roles in Bridgerton and Wicked – Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Eve Myles, Simone Ashley, and James D’Arcy.
If you’re interested in watching Broadchurch, it will be available on Netflix starting November 18th. You can also stream it right now on ITVX if you don’t want to wait!
The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can purchase Ariana & Witches at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
