One Of My Favorite Anthony Edwards Movies From The ’80s Is One That None Of My Friends Even Remember

There’s an Anthony Edwards movie from the 1980s that’s surprisingly overlooked. It’s called Gotcha!, and a lot of people probably haven’t even heard of it. While it might seem like a potential Gen X favorite, I asked around and discovered that many people born in that generation haven’t seen it either. It’s largely forgotten, even among movie fans. But trust me, it’s a genuinely enjoyable film.

It Came As Edwards’ Career Was Really Taking Off

“Gotcha!” is a fun, underrated movie from the 80s. It follows a college student, Jonathan, on a summer trip to Europe that unexpectedly turns into a Cold War thriller – but with plenty of humor. The film features Linda Fiorentino as a captivating spy from Czechoslovakia and includes a memorable appearance by Alex Rocco as Jonathan’s father.

The film unfortunately didn’t perform well in theaters, which was unexpected considering the actor’s rising popularity. It was released in 1985, sandwiched between the hits Revenge of the Nerds (1984) and Top Gun (1986). That same year, he also had a memorable part in the comedy The Sure Thing. Interestingly, Gotcha! was directed by Jeff Kanew, who also directed Revenge of the Nerds.

For Some Reason, No One Seems To Remember It

I have a friend who always says his favorite movie is Gotcha! – and I think I’m the only one who agrees with him. It’s a classic ’80s comedy, and it was released right at the peak of Cold War tensions, when both sides were heavily invested in their political messaging.

Beyond the intrigue, it’s a genuinely exciting story. It follows a college student unexpectedly thrust into a spy adventure, taking him from Paris to West Berlin, and ultimately across Checkpoint Charlie into the mysterious and somewhat frightening East Berlin. The idea of East Berlin – a place shrouded in secrecy – really captured my imagination back then. There’s also a fantastic scene where the main character, Jonathan, cleverly disguises himself as a German punk musician to sneak across the heavily guarded border.

It’s easy to see why people might have forgotten about this movie – for a long time, it wasn’t available on any streaming services, and you couldn’t even rent or buy it digitally. Thankfully, it’s now available to rent with an Amazon Prime subscription. I recently rewatched it and was impressed by how well it holds up. If you’re looking for a classic Cold War comedy thriller, I highly recommend it.
